Trinity Women Win 2016 SCAC Women's Basketball Title

SHREVEPORT, La. - Trinity University took control in the second quarter and never trailed again to earn a 66-50 victory over Schreiner University in the championship game of the 2016 SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament Sunday afternoon at Centenary College's Gold Dome. Official Tournament Website

Tournament MVP Monica Holguin had a game-high 23 points along with six assists and six steals to lead the Tigers to the conference crown. Elizabeth Balido added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Schriener was led by Kelsie Jackson's 11 points while Sabriyyah Fennell had a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trailing 11-2 early, Trinity went on an 8-3 run to end the first quarter and then took the lead for good with 7:03 remaining in the half. 
  • Trinity held Schreiner to 25.8 percent shooting for the game.
  • Schreiner out-rebounded Trinity 49-33 and outscored them 11-1 on second chance points.

NOTABLES
  • Trinity won its first SCAC women's tournament title since 2013 and its fourth in program history.
  • The all-tournament team consisted of Bryce Frank of Austin College; Jackson and Fennell of Schreiner; and Barrett, Allison Staley and Holguin of Trinity. 
  • Holguin was named tournament MVP.
  • Trinity has played in the last four conference championship games, going 2-2 in those games.
  • Schreiner ends its season with a 14-13 record.

Trinity improves to 22-5 on the season and will find out its NCAA Tournament first-round matchup on Monday when the NCAA announces the 2016 national bracket.
