Gertz Powers CC Past PrairieWolves

McKenzee Gertz poured in a career-high 29 points to lead the Colorado College women's basketball team to a decisive 88-70 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University on Friday night at Reid Arena. 
 
Gertz connected on five of 10 shots from behind the arc and was 11-for-22 overall. The junior winger drained back-to-back three-pointers early in the fourth quarter to help the Tigers re-establish control after the PrairieWolves cut their 28-point deficit to 12.
 
Gertz, who scored 20 or more points for the 10th time in her career, became the 23rd player in program in program history to record 800 or more points. She also grabbed nine rebounds.
 
CC led 53-25 after freshman guard Tori Matson converted a three-point play with 2:05 remaining in the first half.
 
NWU pulled to within 12 points when Caitlin Navratil scored on a layup 19 seconds into the fourth quarter, but a three-point play by senior guard Jordan Meltzer ignited a 12-3 which gave the Tigers a 21-point lead with 6:21 remaining.
 
Freshman guard Anna Fanelli finished with nine points, seven assists and five rebounds.
 
Rosie Braley pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to help Colorado College finish with a 50-34 advantage on the glass.
 
Navratil led the PrairieWolves with 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
 
The Tigers never trailed thanks to a 29-point outburst in the first quarter, its largest of the season.
 
Overall, CC shot 47 percent from the field and almost 43 percent from behind the arc.
 
NWU shot 36 percent from the field, but knocked down nine 3-pointers.
 
 
Colorado College Standouts
Talia Cloud scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Mia Thurber finished with 12 points and three assists. 
 
Nebraska Wesleyan Standouts
McKenzie Teten scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Sydney Skupa grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.
 
Game Notes
CC improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 at home. 
NWU slipped to 2-2.
 
Next for the Tigers
Colorado College plays host Dennison University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
