Schreiner snaps UST's winning streak

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas saw their seven-game winning streak snapped Sunday as visiting Schreiner came away with an 88-82 victory.

At UST's Jerabeck Center, Oni Boodoo's layup with 35 seconds remaining in the game gave Schreiner a four-point lead and helped the Mountaineers complete a fourth-quarter comeback. The Celts led by as many as six in the final period.

Sheridan Hopkins (Galveston, Texas / Ball) scored a game-high 22 points to four Celts scoring in double figures. Bresha Orange (Longview, Texas / Panola College) chipped in 12 points.

Freshman guard Micayla Hamilton (Richmond, Texas / Foster) and Aerial Starks (Houston, Texas / A&M Consolidated) scored 11 points apiece for the Celts (15-5), who fell to 10-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

UST's Hayden Morin (Humble, Texas / Atascocita) added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range.

The Celts led 74-69 with six minutes remaining in the game before Schreiner scored seven unanswered points to take a two-point lead with three and half minutes left to play. From there, neither team could build a two-possession lead until Boodoo's layup in the final minute.

Zahra Cross scored 19 points to lead Schreiner (10-9, 7-4 SCAC).

The Celts seek a return to their winning ways Friday when they travel to Seguin to face Texas Lutheran. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
