Men's XC Recap (Week 1) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Six of the eight SCAC men's cross country teams were in action the opening weekend of the 2014 season. 

Colorado College
The Colorado College men's cross country team wrapped up its 2014 preseason on Saturday at the University of Colorado time trial in Boulder, Colo. Senior Graham Frank led the Tigers at the University of Colorado time trial with a 13th-place finish. He clocked in at 28:41 on the 8.03-kilometer course, over 30 seconds faster than his time at this race last year. Sophomore Conor Terhune placed 16th with a time of 9:26. Junior Tucker Hampson (17th) and sophomore Jacob Rothman (19th) also produced top 20 finishes. Rothman's time of 29:57 knocked nearly two seconds of his time from last year. The Rust Buster event, hosted by UCCS, will take place in North Monument Valley Park and is where the Tigers will open up their season.
 
University of Dallas
The University of Dallas men opened its 2014 campaign at the Texas Wesleyan University Ram Rumble where the Crusaders took third-place on Friday. First-year head coach Matt Barber received strong performances from Ryan McAnany, who finished seventh with a time of 17:14 while Javier Secaira (18:05) and Jack Grubner (18:08) were right behind him in 13th and 14th. The Crusaders return to action on September 13th as they travel to UT-Arlington's Gerald Ritchey Invite.

Schreiner University
Junior Kevin Perez finished 14th overall in a time of 22:47 (6k) and paced the Schreiner Mountaineers to a fourth place finish  at the Alamo City Opener on Friday night. Freshman Ricky Canales was second on the team with a time of 24:22 in his first collegiate race, and placed 22n. He was followed by sophomore Connor Ver Schuur (25:08, 23rd), freshman Marshall Sereno (28:49, 25th), freshman Taylor Garces and junior Elliott Frey. Schreiner travels to Seguin next Saturday to run in the Texas Lutheran Invitational at 9:30 am.

Southwestern University
The Southwestern University men kicked off the 2014 season by falling just short to Concordia (Texas) in a dual race at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown. Alex Medrano starts his junior season as he pulled away from the field to finish with a time of 17:54.79 – almost a full minute better than the third place finisher. The Pirate men as a team placed behind cross-town rival Concordia in the 5k race at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown. Kyle Bauernschmitt was the only other Pirate to capture a top 10 finish as he placed seventh with a time of 19:54.97. The Pirate men return to action next weekend in Seguin, Texas, for the Texas Lutheran Invitational.

Texas Lutheran University
The Texas Lutheran Men's Cross Country Team ran for the very first time as a collegiate squad Friday. In the non-Division I category, the Bulldogs took third in the team standings with 80 total points. Freshman runner Blake Westbrook paced the Bulldogs with the 11th place finish in a time of 22 minutes, 22.63 seconds. Fellow freshman Travis Koenig came home in 14th in a time of 22:41.08. Next up for the TLU men is the Texas Lutheran University Invitational which will be run on campus Saturday, September 6th.

Trinity University
Trinity's men's team scored 21 points to win its section of the 6,000-meter race, while the women were even more impressive in their 4,000-meter victory. Junior Taylor Piske once again paced the Tiger men's team, finishing second overall and first among non-DI runners. Sophomore Austin Brown rebounded nicely from an injury-plagued first year with the Tigers, finishing second in the race. The Tiger men return to action on September 19 at the UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic. 

The Austin College and Centenary College women were off last week. Both teams open their 2014 seasons on Friday, Sept. 5 at the University of Texas-Tyler Braveheart Invitational.
