Softball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All seven teams were in action this past weekend as Texas Lutheran moved their winning streak to 23 games while Austin College, Southwestern, and Trinity picked up big wins.

Austin College
The 'Roos finally returned home after being away since February due to mother nature and came away with a huge split with Southwestern Univesity. The 'Roos took both games on teh first day, 1-0 and 3-2. Game one was a pitchers' duel from start to finish, with Austin College's Victoria Herrera and Southwestern's Cozette Palmer keeping things scoreless through the first seven innings of the game and forcing extra innings. Austin College was limited to just two hits until the eighth frame, when Raquel Vara drew a walk and stole second base, and Hailey Clendennen belted a game winning double to left field to win it. Clendennen finished the game going 2-for-4, while Herrera pitched a complete game shutout, scattering four hits while striking out six batters with zero walks. In game two, Mary Whitworth beat a throw home on a fielder's choice by Vara to square things up. England followed with a single to the gap in left field, and Lauren Mara came home for the winning run to make it a 3-2 final. Southwestern would respond the following day, earning 7-0 and 13-3 wins to even up the series. The 'Roos move to 10-12 overall and picked up huge SCAC wins to go to 5-11 in the SCAC. They will enjoy a week away from SCAC play as they battle Jarvin Christian on the road in non-conference action on Sunday.

Centenary College 
The Ladies had a tough weekend, dropped a double header, 13-4 and 13-12 (8) to the Ozarks followed by an 8-6 loss to Hendrix. Against the Eagles, Carissa Herndon paced the Maroon and White on the afternoon going 5-for-7 with three RBI. In the wild second game, Herndon and Raney Mixon led the Ladies at the dish with multi-hit efforts. Herndon posted four hits in the contest with two RBI while Mixon added three hits. Anna Dunn led the squad with three RBI in the outing. Haley Miller supplied two runs batted in. Against Hendrix, the Ladies only came away with two hits, but took advantage of Warrior errrors to score six runs. Dunn led the way with a hit and two runs scored while Herndon drove in three RBI. The Ladies move to 7-18 overall and remain 4-12 in SCAC play. They return to the road this upcoming weekend for a four game series against Trinity University. 

University of Dallas
The Crusaders had a tough weekend as they dropped four to SCAC leader, Texas Luthearn University, 6-2, 10-0, 9-0, and 2-1. Lyda Tesauro smacked a two RBI single in the first inning to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead early on; however, the Bulldogs battled back, scoring three in the first and picking up a 6-2 win. After two blowout wins from the Bulldogs, the Crusaderes got an excellent performance from ace Katie Lee in the finale. She pitched six complete innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Taylor Garcia was 1-for-3 with a RBI while Tesauro was 1-for-3 with a triple and run scored. The Crusadres again held the lead, 1-0, going into the bottom of the fourth, but it was not enough as TLU responded with two runs. The Crusaders are now 16-14 overall and 9-9 in SCAC play. Dallas will return home this upcoming weekend as they welcome in Schreiner University for a four game series. 

Schreiner University
Schreiner took one of four games over Trinity this past weekend at home. After falling 3-0 in the first game, Dominique Sandoval pitched a complete game and Samantha Cordon gave her an early lead with a three-run bomb in the first inning as Schreiner defeated Trinity 7-3 in the second game and earned a split of their doubleheader. In their win, Cordon finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored while Sarah Worrell went 3-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Sydney Christopher and Brianna Rodriguez each finished 1-for-3 with a RBI. The next day, Trinity took a 12-0 and 14-6 win. In the finale, Worrell finished 2-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI while Sydney Christopher was 1-for-2 with two RBI. The Mountaineers are now 5-25 on the season and 4-12 in SCAC play. They return to action this upcoming weekend as they take on the University of Dallas on the road in a four game series.

Southwestern University
The Pirates went 2-2 over the weekend as they split with the Austin College 'Roos this past weekend. On day one, the Pirates suffered a pair of walk off losses, dropping 1-0 and 3-2 games. They would respond in grand fashion on day two, taking a 7-0 and 13-3 win to even the series. Caroline Young led at the plate going 3--for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the first game. Sydney Oorlog and Jordan Kunz both logged two hits each. Cozette Palmer earned the complete game shutout, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out 11. She was terrific the day before in a 1-0 loss in extras. In the second game, Berkeley BaconMichele Ramos and Irvin all recorded three hits in the win. Alyssa Novander earned the complete game win, allowing three runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out two. Southwestern improves to 16-14 on the year and 12-4 in the SCAC with the wins. Southwestern has a huge series coming up as they take on top-ranked Texas Lutheran University in a four game series.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs moved their school record winning streak to 23 games as they swept the University of Dalls this past weekend, 6-2, 10-0, 9-0, and 2-1. On the first day, Texas Lutheran erased a two run first inning deficit and scored six unanswered to earn a 6-2 win and then followed that up with a 10-0 shutout. Ashley Jacobsen went a combined 4-for-6 with four runs scored, an RBI, and three stolen bases. Jacquelyn Brown collected five hits in six at-bats. She scored three runs, drove in three (all in the second game), and stole three bases. Taylor Grissom moved to 11-0 with the win in game one. Grissom tossed six innings. She struck out one, walked two and allowed two earned runs. Veny Pizana pitched four shutout innings to earn the game-two win. Pizana struck out two, walked two and surrendered just three hits. On the second day, Hope Estes got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first inning. Her day wasn't done though, as she ripped a two-run double in the second to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. The senior finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Grissom improved to 12-0 with the win. The series finale was the closest of the four games, with the Bulldogs receiving an excellent pitching performance from Samantha Yenne. The sophomore earned the win, improving to 4-2 on the year. She tossed five innings, giving up just one run on two hits. She didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The winning run was scored in the fifth inning, with TLU utilizing a little small-ball to scratch across the go-ahead score. Grace Estes led the inning off with a walk, then stole second. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. She came home off a Jennifer Gallagher sacrifice fly to left field. Texas Lutheran moves to 26-4 overall and 16-0 in SCAC play. They will remain at home and take on Southwestern University this upcoming weekend.

Trinity University
The Tiger softball team went 3-1 this past weekend against Schreiner. Kaci Wellik (3-6) pitched six shutout innings to lead the way for the Tigers, allowing four hits and striking out seven batters. Katie Glomb relieved Wellik in the seventh and picked up the team’s first save of the season. Caitlynn Dykes put the Tigers on the board in the opening game with a two-out home run in the first inning. Trinity’s all-time home run leader cracked her first round-tripper of the season, and the 12th of her career. Brittany Haby drove in a run in the sixth inning, while Katie Castillon hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Dykes for her second run of the game.  Haby batted 2-3 in the opening game. In the final two games, Dykes batted 2-3 with three RBI and one run scored, while Emily Fleischman hit 2-4 with two RBI and a run. Lauren Mercado went 2-4 at the plate, and scored two runs. Mackenzie Hill hit 2-3 with two RBI and one run, and Katie Castillon went 2-2 with a run scored. Kaci Wellik and Rebecca Berreth also drove in two runs each. Berreth and Sara McCarty were also counted in the two runs department. Wellik pitched for three innings and garnered the victory, while allowing four hits, no walks, and fanning four batters. Katie Glomb pitched the final two innings of the opener. Wellik also picked up the win in the six-inning second game, and improved to 5-6 on the season. She yielded eight hits, five earned runs, and no walks over five innings. Wellik contributed to the offensive cause by batting 2-2 with three RBI and one run. Castillon was the relief pitcher for the final inning. Trinity moves to 9-15 overall and 4-6 in SCAC play. They will take on UMHB in a two game series followed by a four game series at home against Centenary.
