Softball Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All seven SCAC teams took the field this past weekend with a few teams taking some Spring Break trips as the SCAC was spread as far as the beaches of South Carolina to the desserts in Arizona. 

Austin College
The 'Roos dropped four games in their conference opener to Texas Lutheran to drop to 5-5 on the season and 0-4 in SCAC play. Austin College struggled all weekend, only scoring two runs while allowing 26. After dropping an 8-0 decision in the first game of the series, the 'Roos got a great performance from Victoria Herrera, who pitched 6.0 innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out four in a 2-0 loss. The offensive woes continued for the 'Roos as they dropped a second 8-0 decision the following day. The Bulldogs completed the sweep with a 10-2 win. The 'Roos earned their lone RBI from Chelsea Easley, who finished 1-for-1 on the day. Lauren Mara finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Raquel Vara also had a run scored. Austin College's home series against Trinity Univeristy was completely washed out due to inclement weather and will not be made up. The 'Roos, who have now seven games cancelled in 2015, will hit the road to take on the University of Dallas this upcoming weekend for a four game series. 

Centenary College 
The Ladies moved to 5-7 overall and 2-6 in SCAC play as they dropped three out of four to the University of Dallas this past weekend. Battling weather and schedule changes, the Ladies and Crusaders tok the field on Saturday night. Centenary split the first night, dropping a 2-0 decision before battling back for a 2-1 win. Brittinie Mathis and Anna Dunn provided the two RBI hits in the final game of the twinbill. Dunn’s hit scored Haley Miller and secured the victory in the fourth inning. Mathis placed the Maroon and White on the board with a base hit that scored Morgan Daigle. Daigle, Emily Sexton and Cadie Hancock each logged multiple hit efforts in the win. Miller (3-1) picked up the decision in the circle. The freshman allowed the lone Crusaders’ run on seven hits in the complete-game effort. The following day, the Ladies dropped a 3-2 and 10-1 decision to the Crusaders. Raney Bryant garnered three hits on the day while Emily Sexton grabbed two to total half of the Ladies’ offensive production in the doubleheader. Melanie Wilson (3-2) and Laura Perilloux (1-5) took the losses for the Ladies. The Ladies willl return home for the first time since February 19th as they welcome in Southwestern University. 

University of Dallas
The Crusaders had a busy, yet successful, weekend as they went 7-1 to improve to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in SCAC play. The Crusaders began their weekend at Myrtle Beach, picking up wins over SUNY Canton (12-2), La Roche (5-4), Albertus Magnus (1-0), and Cazenovia College (3-0). Madison Goforth was excellent throughout the weekend, finished 5-for-11 with two doubles, two triples, and six RBIs. Katie Lee earned all four wins over the weekend. As the Crusaders returned home, they welcomed in the Ladies of Centenary for a four game conference series, taking three out of four games. Lee was excellent yet again, earning all three wins and finishing the week 7-1 with 53.0 innings pitched, allowing only six earned runs to go with 32 total strikeouts and three complete game shutouts. She moves to 10-4 on the season. In the first two games, the two teams split, with Dallas taking the first game 2-0 followed by a 2-1 loss. Lyda Tesauro finished 3-for-5 in the two games with a double, triple, and two runs scored. After earning a 3-2 win the following day, Dallas clinched the series with a dominant 10-1 victory. Taylor Garcia had a monster day, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored, hitting her second homer of the season and becoming the career leading in homeruns in Dallas softball history. Tesauro added a 2-for-3 day with a RBIs and four runs scored. The Crusaders will be back at home this upcoming weekend as they welcome in the Austin College 'Roos for a four game series. 

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers had a tough weekend, going 0-4 in a conference weekend series to Southwestern as they move to 3-9 overall and 3-5 in SCAC play. Schreiner was able to put some runs on the board, but could not slow down the Pirate offense, allowing 38 runs over the weekend. In the first game, Schreiner jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Pirates responded with 13 straight runs and cruised to an 18-6 win. Reanna Garces led the way, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs. The Mountaineers struggled again in the following game, falling 9-1. The following day, Schreiner was able to slow down the Pirate bats, but could not avoid the sweep as they fell 6-2 and 5-1. Samantha Cordon finished 4-for-6 in the two games with a RBI while Garces also drove in a run. Schreiner will welcome in Our Lady of the Lake on Tuesday before hitting the road to Seguin to take on Texas Lutheran University in a four game conference series. 

Southwestern University
The Pirates went had a huge weekend, going 5-1 including four wins in SCAC play to go to 8-10 overall and 4-0 in conference. The Pirates began the week by wrapping up their Spring Break trip to Tucson, Ariz., where the finished 3-1. The Pirates fell to Alfred, 7-3, but responded with a 12-4 win over Cedar Crest. Caroline Young led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a double, two triples, and three RBIs. Marissa Irvin added a pair of RBIs as well. Southwestern then used a potent offensive attack to outscore Schreiner 38-10 for a series sweep. In the 18-6 win in the opening game, Ashleigh Scott was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored in game one while Stacy Rosengren went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBIs and Sydney Oorlog also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two triples. The following game, in a 9-1 win, Michele Ramos went 4-for-5 from the plate while Irvin and Jordan Kunz both went 2-for-3. The following day, Rosengren led the way, going 4-for-4 in a 6-2 win while Sydney Oorlog was the only Pirate with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in a 5-1 win to clinch the sweep. Alyssa Novander earned three wins over the weekend while Cozette Palmer earned the remaining two wins. The Pirates will hit the road this weekend as they will go into a four game series against Centenary. 

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs opened up conference play with a four game sweep over Austin College as the defending SCAC champions move to 10-4 overall and 4-0 in the SCAC. Texas Lutheran outscored the 'Roos, 28-2, as they got tremendous work in the circle all weekend long. In a pair of 8-0 and 2-0 wins to open the series, Taylor Grissom, Veny Pizana, and Samantha Yenne  combined to toss 13 innings of shutout softball. Jennifer Gallagher was tremendous, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the first game while Jacquelyn Brown had a pair of hits. In the second game, the lone RBI came off the bat of Brayden Pinckard, driving in Hope Estes with a sac fly. Grissom and Amanda Lochte would lock up the series the following day, earning 8-0 and 10-2 wins for the sweep. Pinckard led the way in the first game, going 3-for-3 with a pair of homers and two RBIs. Gallagher, again, was phenomenal, this time in the second game, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and five RBIs. Texas Lutheran returns home this week, taking on Concordia (TX) on Wednesday followed by a four game series against Schreiner University.  

Trinity University
The Tigers were supposed to play eight games throughout the week; however, due to inclement weather, only played two of those games against fifth-ranked Texas-Tyler, falling 11-0 and 12-0 in a pair of five innings losses. The Tigers are now 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in SCAC play. Katie Glomb (2-1) was charged with her first loss of the season, in the top half of the doubleheader. Kaci Wellik (0-3) started the second game. Hilary Hoffman, Emily Fleischman, and Brittany Haby all went 1-for-2 in the matchup. Trinity's matchups against East Texas Baptist as well as their four game conference series against Austin College were all called due to weather. Trinity has lost eight of their last 10 games due to weather. The Tigers have no conference games this weekend, but do return home to take on George Fox in a doubleheader on Sunday.
