LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – As most of SCAC Nation enjoyed holiday breaks for Christmas and New Year's, SCAC hoops was still in full force, as all eight teams were in action the last two weeks. Conference play also got underway this past weekend as we welcomed in 2015 with a bang.
Austin College
The 'Roos went 0-2 over the weekend with losses to Texas-Dallas
and Dallas at home. Austin College fell 72-65 to the Comets as
Kendall Heitmeier led the way off the bench with 24 points while
Christina Kime added 12 points. UT-Dallas shot over 50% in the
second half to outscore the 'Roos by 10 and take the victory.
Austin College then fell in the conference opener to the Crusaders,
64-63, despite 13 points from Jenna Longo. Kali Vittallo and Kime
each added 12 in the loss. The two teams were even throughout the
box score, but neither team could score in the final two minutes,
giving Dallas the victory. The 'Roos will remain at home this
upcoming weekend for conference action as they welcome in Trinity
on Friday and Schreiner on Saturday.
Centenary College
The Ladies went 0-3 over the holiday with a loss to
Hendrix and a pair of conference losses to Colorado College. The
Ladies outscored the Warriors 36-27 in the second half, but could
not overcome poor shooting in the first half in a 69-51 loss to
Hendrix on the road. Briana Edwards was excellent with 22 points,
19 rebounds, four steals, and five blocks in the loss. Rebecca
Thompson added 13 points. The Ladies then took on Colorado College
on the road, falling in the first contest 84-61. Edwards led the
way with 17 points while Linda Gomez Gil added 11. In the second
matchup, Centenary fell short to the Tigers again, 73-65. DeiAnna
Hall led the way with 19 points while Thompson added 15. The Ladies
will remain on the road, as they will take on Texas Lutheran on
Friday and Southwestern on Saturday in conference action.
Colorado College
Colorado College began the New Year on the right foot by
prevailing in a pair of games against Centenary last week at Reid
Gymnasium. Courtney Tyus recorded her first triple-double to lead
the Tigers to an 84-61 victory in the series opener on Friday
night. The team’s only senior recorded 15 points, 11 rebounds
and 10 assists, which matched her career high set during her
freshman season at Southwestern. Junior Danielle Davis led the team
for the sixth time this season with 23 points. Junior Katie Waters
also scored in double figures with 19 points. On Saturday
afternoon, Waters poured in a career-high 26 points to lead the
Tigers to a 73-65 triumph. Waters drained 9-of-10 attempts from the
floor along with 7-of-9 from the free-throw line to lead the
offense, which hit 27-of-54 from the floor for a 50.0 field-goal
percentage. Tyus added 17 points and team highs of eight rebounds
and seven assists, while Davis finished with 15 points, five
rebounds and five assists. Despite trailing by 11 points midway
through the first half, the Ladies knotted the score at 58-58 with
6:58 remaining. After that, the CC used eight points from Waters to
close out the game with a 15-7 run. Colorado College travels to
Texas to take on Southwestern and Texas Lutheran next Friday and
Saturday, respectively.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders had a successful holiday season, going 3-0
with wins over Sul Ross State, Hillsdale Free Will Baptist, and
Austin College to move to 7-2 on the season. In a 72-55 win over
the Lobos, the Crusaders had a huge second half, outscoring their
opponent 44-24 to pull away for the win. Marleyna Bustamante led
the way with 15 points while Holly Tonry added 11 points. The
Crusaders rang in the new year with a 84-73 win over Hillsdale Free
Will Baptist as Sammi Tso led the scoring attach with 19 points.
Michelle DeCoud added 15 points while Lindsey Gendron and Holly
Tonry had 12 points each with Tonry adding seven assists. Against
Austin College, Dallas earned its first conference victory of the
season over the 'Roos, 64-63, as Bustamante led the way with 19
points while Brooke Hagemann added 15 points and seven boards. The
Crusaders will take on Hendrix College on Monday night and then
return home to take on Schreiner and Trinity in conference
play.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers went 1-1 over the weekend, picking up a
big win over LeTourneau before dropping a contest to #18 UT-Tyler.
In a 60-53 win over the YellowJackets, Kelsie Jackson led the
attack with 12 points and seven rebounds while Tylor Rambeau 11
points. Brooke Sanders and Sabriyyah Fennell also had 10 points
each in the win. The Mountaineers held LETU to 33% shooting from
the field while shooting 41% in the second half to take the
victory. Against the Patriots, Schreiner struggled to get anything
going, falling 75-43. Brooke Sanders led the way with eight points
in the contest. Schreiner will hit the road this weekend to take on
Dallas on Friday and Austin College on Saturday in conference
play.
Southwestern University
The Pirates went 1-1 over the weekend including a huge
win to open conference play. Against the Tornadoes, the Pirates
fell in double overtime, 85-78, despite a 23 points, 12 rebound
performance from Jordan Owens. Annie Bourne added 16 points and 16
boards while Olivia Podras had 12 points and four assits. Valerie
Logan also had 12 assists in the contest. Southwestern would then
open the conference season against the defending SCAC champion
Texas Lutheran Bulldogs. The Pirates jumped out to a 44-37 lead and
used tough defense to hold off the Bulldogs for the victory. Owens
led teh way again with 16 points and 10 rebounds while McKamie
Place had 12 points. Bourne pulled down 14 rebounds while Logan had
nine assists. The Pirates will welcome in Colorado College on
Friday and Centenary on Saturday to continue SCAC play.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs went 1-2 over the weekend with losses to UT-Tyler and
Southwestern and a victory over LeTourneau. TLU fell to UT-Tyler,
81-59, despite an 18 point effort from Taylor Dydalewicz and 17
points and six assists from Karisa Cantu. The Bulldogs would bounce
back against the YellowJackets, erasing a four point halftime
deficit for a 74-72 victory thanks to 20 points from Cantu and 14
points from Dydalewicz. Chelsey Stolle also added nine points and
13 boards. Finally, in their first conference contest of the
season, Texas Lutheran could not erase a seven point halftime
deficit and fell to Southwestern, 72-69. Savannah Hight led the way
with 15 points while Cantu poured in 14. Dydalewicz also had 13
points. TLU will return home this weekend as they welcome in
Centenary and Colorado College in SCAC play.
Trinity University
The Tigers went 3-0 over the holidays and ran their winning streak
to nine games with wins over McMurry, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and
Texas-Dallas. Against the Warhawks, Caitlin Barrett's 13 points and
Anecia Richardson's 10 points and seven boards led the Tigers to a
63-47 victory. The Tigers would then defeat Wisconsin-Eau Claire
behind a pair of 20 point games from Richardson and Hannah Coley.
The duo came up big against against the Comets, as Coley scored 20
again while Richardson had 15 and 10 for a 57-52 win. Trinity will
hit the road this upcoming weekend as they travel to take on Austin
College on Friday and Dallas on Saturday.
