LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – We move to the halfway point of the season after this past weekend of SCAC women's basketball play. It was a huge weekend for Trinity, who notched three wins while Schreiner added a 2-1 weekend.
Austin College
The 'Roos went 1-1 over the weekend, picking up a huge win over
Texas Lutheran at home before falling to Southwestern the following
day. Against the Bulldogs, the 'Roos outscored Texas
Lutheran 6-2 in the last two minutes and that would prove to be
enough as the 'Roos held off the Bulldogs 70-67.
Erin Riley knocked down 4-of-8 threes to finish with 21
points and added seven boards, three assists, and two steals to
lead the 'Roos. Christina Kime added 16 points and three steals,
while Kali Vittallo and Brianna Harvey each chipped in 11 points in
the win. In a 79-75 loss to Southwestern, Kime finished
with 22 points and seven assists to lead Austin College, knocking
down 4-of-7 threes and adding four rebounds and two steals. Kendall
Heitmeier finished with 13 points and Vittallo hit 4-of-9 from deep
to add 12 points and three assists. Austin College moves to 8-9 on
the season and 3-4 in SCAC play. They will take on the same two
teams this weekend, this time battling TLU on Friday in Seguin and
Southwestern on Saturday in Georgetown.
Centenary College
The Ladies went 0-2 on the weekend with losses to Trinity
an Schreiner. Centenary fell 86-35 on the road to the Tigers on
Friday evening. Brianna Edwards posted 12 points and 12
rebounds in the effort marking her fourth straight double-digit
scoring effort and 11th of the season as well as her sixth
double-double. Edwards followed that up with another double-double,
scoring 15 and pulling down 15 boards in a 60-49 loss to
Schreiner. DeiAnna Hall joined the junior in double
digits with 13 points for the Maroon and White. Centenary goes to
0-18 on the season and 0-8 in conference play. They will return
home this weekend, this time welcoming in Trinity and
Schreiner.
Colorado College
Colorado College gets another shot at the teams it lost
to on the road last week. Danielle Davis scored 20 of her game-high
25 points in the second half, but a series of 20-point deficits
proved too large to overcome as the Tigers dropped an 81-69
decision at Schreiner on Friday night. Davis, who eclipsed the
20-point mark for the fourth time this season and the seventh time
in her career, became the 20th player in program history to score
800 or more career points. The junior forward finished the game
with 802. Senior guard Courtney Tyus scored 18 points for the
Tigers, while sophomore forward Korbyn Ukasick added 13 points and
seven boards. Junior guard Katie Wirth pulled down a career-high 12
rebounds to help CC build a 48-34 advantage on the glass. Colorado
College stayed within striking distance of first-place Trinity for
more than 15 minutes, however the hosts asserted themselves during
the final 4:21 of the first half and cruised to a 76-43 victory on
Saturday night. Ukasick led Colorado College with 12 points and
shared the team lead of seven rebounds with senior guard Courtney
Tyus. Freshman guard Francesca Cendali connected on three of eight
shots from behind the arc to tie her season high of nine
points.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders went 1-1 this past weekend, defeating
Southwestern on Friday night before falling to Texas Lutheran the
following day. In a 63-60 win over the Pirates, freshman Michelle
DeCoud paced the Crusaders with 19 points followed by an 18 point
performance from Marleyna
Bustamante. Sophomore Seana
Stoia added 11 points to wrap up the trio of scorers in
double figures on the evening. In an 89-76 loss to
TLU, Bustamante eclipsed the 20-point mark the
first time this season as the guard claimed a season-high 24
points. Fellow classmate Brooke
Hagemann contributed 19 points and was second on the
team with six rebounds. Completing the trio of double figure
scorers with 10 was sophomore Stoia. Dallas will
go on the road this upcoming weekend as they take on Southwestern
on Friday in Georgetown followed by Texas Lutheran on
Saturday.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers went 2-1 in conference play over the
weekend, falling to Trinity, but bouncing back to knock off
Colorado College and Centenary. The Mountaineers started the
weekend with a 58-45 loss to the Tigers at home. Kelsie Jackson led
the way with 10 points and six rebounds. In a 81-69 win over the
Tigers, four Mountaineers scored in double figures in the
victory. Sabriyyah Fennell scored a team-high 18 points
(and dished out three assists) but also get a lot of help from
Kelsie Jackson (16 points), Codi Simmons (13 points, three
rebounds) and Brooke Sanders (12 points, four boards). Schreiner
topped the week with a 60-49 win over Centenary. Jackson
was phenonmenal, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Schreiner will now go on the road, as they make their longest trip
of the season, going to Colorado College on Friday and Centenary on
Sunday.
Southwestern University
The Pirates split the weekend at 1-1, falling to Dallas
before bouncing back to defeat Austin College on the weekend. In a
63-60 loss to the Crusaders, Jordan Owens led the
Pirates with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Olivia
Podaras had a strong game off the bench with 11 points
and six rebounds in 22 minutes. Annie
Bourne posted 13 boards and moves within 57 rebounds of
tying the SCAC all-time career rebounding
record. Valerie Logan had three assists tonight to move
her into 10th in the SCAC in career assists. The
following day, the Pirates found their shooting touch, defeating
the 'Roos 79-75. Owens led all scorers with 25
points on 9-for-14 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 from three
point range. Annie Bourne added in 21
and Madison Eschle 13. The Pirates move to
7-11 overall and 5-2 in the SCAC and now return home for conference
play, welcoming in Dallas on Friday and Austin College on
Saturday.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs went 1-1 over the weekend falling to Austin College,
but bouncing back with a win over Dallas on the road. In a 70-67
loss to the 'Roos, Taylor Dydalewicz was outstanding,
pouring in 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting. She was also
3-of-6 from behind the arc, and a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity
stripe. Karisa Cantu did a little bit of everything with nine
points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and four steals. In the
89-76 win over Dallas, Dydalewicz against came up
huge. The junior was just about perfect on Saturday,
finishing with 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting. She opened up by
making her first eight shots, and finished 3-of-3 from behind the
arc. The junior averaged 24.5 points per contest in two games this
weekend. Kristen Lye added 14 points while Cantu had 12. The
Bulldogs go to 9-8 on the season and 4-3 in SCAC play. They welcome
in Austin College to the Dog House on Friday and Dallas on
Saturday.
Trinity University
The Tigers went 3-0 over the weekend, defeating Schreiner,
Centenary, and Colorado College to notch three more conference
wins. In a 58-45 win over Schreiner, Hannah Coley scored
14 of her team-best 21 points in the decisive first half of action.
She opened a 9-0 run with a go-ahead three-point bucket early
in the half, and Trinity never trailed again. Coley also
pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, dished out four assists,
and nabbed five steals. In an 86-35 win over
Centenary, Monica Holguin and Rebecca Gordon both scored
12 points to lead the way for the Tigers. Holguin shot 6-10 from
the field, while Gordon, who came off the bench, hit 7-7 free
throws. They finished the week with a 76-43 win over Colorado
College. Lauren Splawn led the way with a game-high 13
points. Splawn shot 6-10 from the field. Anecia Richardson
contributed 12 points, hitting six of her 11 shots, and tied a
team-high with seven rebounds. Richardson now is five points shy of
tying Teresa Machu (1980-1984) for 10th place in Tiger
women’s scoring history. Rebecca Gordon also scored 12
points, on 5-12 shooting from the field, and 2-3 in three-point
range. The Tigers are now 15-3 on the season and 6-1 in conference.
they will travel to Centenary on Friday and follow that up with a
matchup against Colorado College on
Sunday.
