LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Christian Muscarello of Trinity University and Courtlynd Miller of Schreiner University have been selected as the SCAC Male and Female Character & Community Student-Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Sunday, March 30.
The SCAC Character & Community award was created in 2009 to
honor and recognize the efforts of the
extraordinary student-athletes of the conference who not
only excel athletically on the field, course, court, pool or
track, but also by serving their campus and community.

CHRISTIAN MUSCARELLO OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a
senior from Tucson, Arizona, has been selected the SCAC Character
& Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week
ending Sunday, March 30, 2014.Earlier this season, Muscarello became the 36th player in SCAC history to reach 200 career hits, and he is in the top 10 in Trinity history in both career hits (224) and runs (153), and is ranked 12th among all Tiger players in career RBI (124). He is third in Trinity history with 56 career doubles, and is 15th among all Tiger players in career batting average (.353). This season, he is second in the SCAC in doubles (8) and third in RBI (23) as the Tigers currently reside atop the SCAC standings with an 8-1 conference mark.
Muscarello has participated in numerous community service events over his time at Trinity. He has volunteered with both the Alamo Heights Little League Youth Baseball Camps and the Trinity Youth Baseball Camps, as well as volunteering with McAllister Little League field renovation. Muscarello has also worked with Lone Star Play Ball Special Needs and with the Ocean State Waves elementary school reading program.
Community service is something that has long been an important part of Muscarello’s life, having worked three years as a Tucson Marathon volunteer, and working extensively with the Coronado National Park Trail Repair prior to coming to San Antonio.
Muscarello is attempting to lead Trinity to its third SCAC Championship in his four seasons with the team, as well as a fifth consecutive year in the NCAA Playoffs. The Tigers have been ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation this season, and are currently ranked 11th in the nation by D3baseball.com.
COURTLYND MILLER OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a
sophomore on the women's golf team, has been selected the SCAC
Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for
the week ending March 30, 2014.
A native of Timpson, Texas, Miller has emerged as a
leader for the Mountaineer program, both on the course and off. In
the classroom, she is an outstanding student. In her first three
years, as a Pre-Med student, she has earned President’s List
twice and Dean’s List the other semester, and currently
carries a 3.64 GPA. During her freshmen year, Miller was
inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta honors society.
Miller is also a highly-engaged student with a commitment to
service. She is treasurer of SU Votes, working to increase
participation of students in getting out the vote, and has
volunteered for CSI: Prayer Pathway Project and Schreiner
University’s annual Gobble Wobble 5k run which collected food
and supplies for needy families in Kerr County during the holiday
season. She is also a member of SHINE which is a campus bible
study group with a focus on global issues. Miller has
also worked at her church's vacation bible school and with a
children’s grief camp for young people who lost loved ones
and helps them deal with their grief.
Miller has been invited to participate in Schreiner’s
Board of Trustees luncheon for outstanding student leaders, and is
the women’s golf team representative to the Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee. In that capacity, she volunteered to help the
Student Activities Board to conduct a “White Out” on
campus and has recently assisted in the coordination and
presentation of SU’s “Tunnel of Oppression” that
works to end discrimination around the world.
At home, Miller volunteers for HeartsWay Hospice of
Northeast Texas and volunteers at local nursing homes, conducting
bingo and other events for living-assisted residents. She also
works as a camp sponsor for her church camp where she is also
counsels young girls during their week at the event as well as an
assistant for the Exercise Science Department on campus.
On the course, Miller has played in five tournaments in
her first three semesters, including a low round of 78 at the 2013
Alamo City Classic in San Antonio. She shot a 162 at the event
(84-78) to finish 14th. She has quickly become a
“go-to” leader and one of the hardest workers on the
team. She is always ready to take charge of any situation, whether
it be practices, workouts or study table, and her positive spirit
and effort exemplify what the program wants and needs from all of
its players.
