Texas Lutheran Upsets Top-Seeded Trinity; Advances to First SCAC Title Match

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the decisive fifth set, Texas Lutheran took the lead at 3-2 and never looked back, scoring 12 of the next 16 points to earn the 15-6 fifth set win and the upset win over Trinity.
  • The Bulldogs hit .400 in the fifth set compared to .048 for the Tigers.
  • The third set may have been the best played set of the tournament with TLU hitting .375 to Trinity's .300 with the Bulldogs eventually pulling out the 25-23 margin to go up 2-1.
  • For the match, TLU hit .264 while Trinity settled in at .250.

NOTABLES

  • With her 21 digs, Texas Lutheran's Lexi Morris moved into third place on the conference's all-time digs list with 2,518.
  • After five trips to the semifinals, this will be Texas Lutheran's first appearance in the SCAC tournament final. The last time the Bulldogs volleyball program played for a conference championship was in 2010 as a member of the American Southwest Conference.
  • For Trinity, this will be just the fourth time in the 25-year history of the SCAC tournament the Tigers won't be playing in the championship match. The last time Trinity didn't advance to the title game was 2018 when Colorado College and Southwestern played for the championship.
  • This was just the second-ever meeting between Trinity and Texas Lutheran in the SCAC tournament. The Tigers earned a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs in 2013.  
  • This was TLU's first win over Trinity since Sept. 19, 2015 and snapped a 15-match losing streak to the Tigers.

UP NEXT

Texas Lutheran (26-9 overall) advances to the 2022 SCAC Championship where they will take on the winner of this evening's second semifinal between Southwestern and Colorado College. Tomorrow's championship match is scheduled to start at 11 am MT. The winner of the championship match will earn the SCAC's automatic qualifier to the 2022 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship. Trinity falls to 25-4 but as the second-ranked team in the most recent NCAA Region X rankings, the Tigers are in good shape for an at-large bid when the brackets are announced on Monday.
