ABILENE, Texas -- The 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Men's Southwest Regional Championship was a very successful outing for Southwestern University, especially for Ashton Ellis and Oscar Roy, whose fantastic effort won them the Southwest Regional Doubles Championship. Ellis and Roy's win promotes them to All-American status and they become the first men in Southwestern's history to win an ITA Regional Championship. Ellis and Roy will advance to Rome, Georgia on October 12-15 to compete in the ITA Cup. Results

Ellis, a freshman from Baton Rouge, La., only tasted defeat on the first day of singles play in a narrow defeat by Trinity University's Dalton Locke 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 10-6. Ellis then proceeded to win all five of his matches in the consolation bracket including a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Concordia's Andres Padilla in the consolation finals.

Seven of the ten Pirates that competed in the individual tournament saw victory in their opener with Roy and Steven Tibbetts making it to as far as the winner's bracket Round of 16.

The duo of Ellis and Roy were one of four Southwestern pairs in the doubles competition that won their first-round matchup and the only duo to advance past the second round.

Ellis and Roy played consistent tennis throughout their first three matches winning all three by the same 8-4 tally. The semifinal round was a close 8-6 victory to set up a best-of-three set match in the finals against Trinity's Rafael Candelas Ruiz and Alessio Azzalini.

Roy and Ellis had to go to a tiebreaker in the first set before pulling out a 7-6 (7-5) set victory. The second set, however, saw Roy and Ellis impose their will and dictate the rest of the matchup taking the set by a 6-3 tally.
