Softball Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University went 3-3 during the week of Feb. 18-24 as the Pirates kept their record right at the .500 mark. The Pirates were paced by SCAC Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, Caroline Young and Kelsey Kingston, respectively.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College softball team dropped four tough games last week, being outscored by a total of just five runs and having two games go to extra innings. The ‘Roos lost to Howard Payne by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 and then fell to Hardin-Simmons 6-4 and 4-3 to bring their record to 1-9 this season. Jessica Baker had an outstanding weekend at the plate, batting .471 with two doubles, five RBI and a home run, and Mallory Rossman added two doubles and drove in three runs. Sophia Hernandez went 2-for-2 at the plate and also pitched two complete games, both of which went to extra innings.

Centenary dropped four games in the Louisiana College Round Robin. Lauren Swift led Centenary with a .600 batting average (6-for-10) with a team best hit total. Registered two homeruns – tied for the team lead. Ranked second on the team in RBI with three. Totaled a hit in all four contests, including a double. Cadie Hancock led the squad with five RBI and ranked second on the team with a .571 batting average. In her first game in the Maroon and White Erin Crites recorded a hit in her only plate appearance. Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 2 at the Millsaps College Invitational. The Ladies face the host Majors and Webster over the two-day event.

In an 0-2 week, Dallas (0-4) fell Tuesday evening 7-6 and then 10-9 to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Irving, Texas. Erin Begle and Ciara Stewart provided the offensive firepower for head coach Amber Conner's squad. Begle produced a combined three hits (double, triple), while Stewart netted five hits (double). Saturday's home doubleheader versus Sterling College was cancelled due to a winter storm warning in Kansas which rendered Sterling College unable to travel. The Crusaders will host SAGU on Tuesday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

Southwestern
went 3-3 on the week to keep its record at .500. The Pirates are now 5-5 on the season. Southwestern split with Concordia (Texas) on Feb. 19 winning 6-5 before losing Game two 8-4. The Pirates then swept a double header from visiting Hardin-Simmons winning 9-1 (5 innings) and 8-1 before being swept in two games on Sunday. This time the Pirates were swept by future SCAC member Texas Lutheran with the Bulldogs winnings 8-5 and 9-8 – (8 innings). The Pirates return to action on Feb. 27 when they travel to Our Lady of the Lake for two. Southwestern then hosts Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday in a double header.

Trinity went 0-4 last weekend, falling in four tough road games at East Texas Baptist University and the University of Texas-Tyler to fall to 2-6 on the season. The Tigers lost the opener at ETBU 7-0, but bounced back to lead game two 3-2 before falling 4-3 in eight innings. Trinity then lost a 5-4 decision to open Sunday’s doubleheader at UT-Tyler, before finishing with a 9-1 loss in five innings. Trinity will play its first home games of the season this week, hosting Schreiner University in a doubleheader on Wednesday evening. The Tigers took three out of four games from future SCAC member Schreiner last season, splitting two games in San Antonio and sweeping a doubleheader on the road.
