Softball Recap (Week 5) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University went 6-0 on its spring break trip to the Tucson Invitation in Arizona. With the wins, the Pirates extended their season-high winning streak to nine games. Two Pirates stood out as Karen Ramirez and Kelsey Kingston were named SCAC Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College softball team split its doubleheader against Hendrix over the weekend, falling 5-3 in game one before getting a dramatic 8-6 walk off victory in game two. In each game the 'Roos jumped out to an early lead before the Warriors came back, jumping ahead 3-0 in game one and 4-0 in game two. In the second game the 'Roos led 5-1 heading into the final inning before the Warriors plated five runs to put Austin College in a 6-5 hole, but Sophia Hernandez delivered a three run walk off homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Austin College the win. Jessica Baker batted .667 with three doubles in the series and Briana Hernandez hit .571. Charlotte Trudell hit .500 and Heather Farquhar hit .429 with two RBI. Amber Pemberton got her first win of the year, striking out six batters in the game two victory.

Centenary
dropped four games over the week to fall to 1-15 on the season. The Ladies fell in a pair of close games at LSU-Alexandria falling in both 4-3 before returning to Centenary Softball Complex and dropping a twin bill to the University of Houston-Victoria (16-2, 12-0). Lauren Swift continues to lead the Ladies at the dish with a plus-.400 hitting clip. The Beaumont, Texas, native paces the squad with 20-plus hits on the season and sits second on the team in RBI. Cadie Hancock sits among the double digit hit leaders for the Maroon and White along with Nicole Warren. Centenary returns to the diamond on Monday at 4 p.m. against Hendrix. The doubleheader begins an eight-game span for the Ladies this week concluding with a SCAC series against Southwestern beginning on Saturday.

Dallas (1-13) went 0-6 on the week at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Crusaders suffered losses (L, 7-3; L, 3-0; L, 8-7; L, 4-3; L, 12-4; L, 17-0) to Wisconsin Lutheran College, New Jersey City University, Salem State University (Mass.), Olivet College (Mich.), St. Joseph's University (N.Y.) and the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford. Head coach Amber Conner's squad will travel to San Antonio this week to combat Trinity University -- 1 p.m. doubleheader (Saturday); 12 p.m. doubleheader (Sunday).

Southwestern
went 6-0 during its spring break trip to the Tucson Invitational in Arizona. The Pirates extended their winning streak to a season-high nine games and now sit at 15-7 on the season. Southwestern started the trip off with wins over Alfred and Baldwin-Wallace on Tuesday. The Pirates then took games on Wednesday from Marian (Wis.) and Edgewood before finishing the week with two more wins, this time over Dickinson and Edgewood on Thursday. Southwestern returns to action on March 23-24 when the Pirates travel to Shreveport, La. to open up the 2013 SCAC schedule with four games against SCAC first-year member Centenary College.

Trinity
went 5-3 last week, starting with a doubleheader sweep against Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday, and finishing with a 3-3 record at the Tucson Invitational in Arizona. The Tigers opened with a 2-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons, rallying with two runs in the seventh to steal the victory. That win propelled Trinity to an 8-1 win in the next game to start the week off strong. At the Tucson tournament, Trinity began with a 6-4 win in nine innings over Baldwin-Wallace, then suffered a 5-0 loss to Central to snap a four-game winning streak. On Friday, Trinity soundly defeated Chatham 12-2 in five innings, but four errors cost the team four unearned runs in a 4-3 eight-inning loss to Dickinson to finish the day. The Tigers started strongly on the final day with a 9-1 win over Alfred, but were blanked 7-0 in a rematch with Central in the final game of the tournament. Trinity opens SCAC play this weekend with a four-game series against the University of Dallas at home. The Tigers and Crusaders open up with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Last year, Trinity swept all four games from Dallas in the series, recording three shutouts.
