LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - With one week left in the regular season, Trinity University holds a slim half game lead over Southwestern University for the No. 1 seed for next week's SCAC Softball Championship tournament. Southwestern will host Trinity for four games this weekend.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College (5-26, 0-9 SCAC) dropped four
game to Southwestern over the weekend. The Kangaroos lost 5-0, 3-1,
17-11 and 14-6. Austin College returns to action on April 17
hosting Texas-Dallas before finishing up the SCAC regular season
schedule on April 20-21 at the University of Dallas for a
double-header on both days.
Centenary softball dropped six contest of the week,
including four at Trinity. The Ladies combined for two eight runs
on the week with all eight coming at Houston-Victoria. Lauren Swift
led the Maroon and White at the dish with four hits over the six
games, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Ladies with a .308
batting average. Lynsi Unruh and Lindsey Sconce absorbed the six
losses in the circle. Unruh fanned 11 batters during the span.
Centenary faces the University of Dallas in four games this week
beginning on Wednesday. The final two games of the series will be
played in Shreveport on Thursday. Both twin-bills are scheduled for
5 p.m.
Dallas (5-21, 0-8 SCAC) went 4-0 on the week
after being rained out at Centenary College of Louisiana. The
Crusaders won 18-0 and then 27-0 on Saturday versus Sarah Lawrence
College in Bronxville, N.Y., before prevailing 22-0 and then 14-0
on Sunday over the Gryphons. In all, Dallas outscored Sarah
Lawrence 81-0 and hit 12 home runs. Head coach Amber Conner's squad
produced four shut outs and are on a season-high four-game winning
streak. Dallas is slated to host Centenary on Wednesday in a 5 p.m.
doubleheader. They will then head to Shreveport, La., to battle the
Ladies in a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday. The Crusaders will
host Austin College this weekend -- (Saturday, 1 p.m. 2x7; Sunday,
12 p.m. 2x7). Senior shortstop Brittany Castro will be honored on
Senior Day (Sunday).
Southwestern took both games from the Austin College Roos
on Saturday. The first game the Pirates scored early and got 5 runs
on the board by the end of the fourth inning and managed to keep
Austin College from scoring during the game. The final score of
Game 1 was 5-0. The second game started off similarly with
Southwestern putting up 3 runs early. Austin College did put up one
solo homerun late in the game; however despite threatening with
runners in scoring position most of the game, the final score of
game 2 was 3-1 with the Pirates coming out on top again. On Sunday,
Southwestern took both games again. The first game started off with
Austin College scoring 3 runs in the first inning. Southwestern
answered back with 2 runs in the top of the second but wasn’t
able to pull ahead until the seventh inning. At the top of the
seventh, Austin was up 8-4. Southwestern managed to score 6 runs, 4
were brought in on a grand slam by Jessica Bryant. Austin tied it
up again and in the eighth Southwestern scored 7. The final score
of game 1 was 17-11. Game 2 was another big-hitting game with
Southwestern taking the lead early and maintaining it for the game
through 6 innings. The final score was 14-6 with 6 complete
innings.
Trinity was 4-2 over the past week, highlighted by a
four-game SCAC weekend series sweep at home against Centenary,
keeping the Tigers undefeated at 11-0 in conference play. The
Tigers started off slowly this week, snapping the team’s
nine-game winning streak in a pair of losses to Mary Hardin-Baylor
on Tuesday night. However, the team rebounded nicely by the
weekend, picking up four shutout victories to remain atop the SCAC
standings. This week, Trinity will travel to Georgetown, Texas, for
a four-game series showdown with Southwestern University. The
Pirates trail the Tigers by a half-game in the standings, meaning
the winner of this series will be the top seed at the SCAC
Tournament.
