LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University extended its winning streak to nine games thanks to a perfect 4-0 week against SCAC rival the University of Dallas. The Pirates improved to 24-8 overall and 7-1 in SCAC play.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College split its four game weekend
series at Centenary College over the weekend, bring the team's
record to 5-22 overall. The 'Roos are now also 2-5 in Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference play. In game one on Saturday, the
'Roos fell 6-4 after the Ladies scored six runs in the bottom of
the first. The 'Roos got three runs in the second and another in
the fifth but could not quite overcome the early deficit. Heather
Farquhar and Jenny Dowsey each had two hits in the loss, while Sam
Matulis took the loss after surrendering six runs on three hits
with four walks in 0.1 innings. In the second game Saturday the
'Roos took a 5-0 victory, with Sophia Hernandez blasting a two run
homer in the third to put the team on the board first. Farquhar
added a two run hit in the fourth and Chelsea Delaney singled home
the final run in the sixth. Delaney and Jessica Baker each went
2-for-3 and Baker scored three runs. Hernandez pitched a complete
game shutout to get the win, allowing just four hits. On Sunday,
the 'Roos took a 7-1 win in game one, scoring three runs in the
first to grab an early lead.
Centenary (4-24, 3-5 SCAC) split its four game SCAC series
with Austin College. The Ladies won the first game on Friday 6-4
before dropping the second 5-0. Centenary then dropped
Sunday’s first game 7-1 before splitting the series with a
1-0 win in the second game on Sunday. Centenary returns to action
on April 10 hosting Dallas for two SCAC games.
Dallas (1-21, 0-8 SCAC) fell four times to Southwestern University over the weekend in Georgetown, Texas. The Crusaders were defeated 11-0 and 16-0 on Saturday and suffered 13-3 and 15-0 losses on Sunday. Head coach Amber Conner's squad will take to the diamond on Wednesday in Shreveport, La., to combat Centenary College of Louisiana in a 5 p.m. doubleheader. The team will then head to Bronxville, N.Y., for games with Sarah Lawrence College -- (Saturday, 10 a.m. EDT 2x7; Sunday, 11 a.m. EDT 2x7).
On Saturday, Southwestern University faced off
against Dallas and managed two wins, both in 5 innings. Game 1
started off to a slow start and it wasn’t until inning three
that the Pirates were able to put runs on the board. Southwestern
scored 8 runs in the 3rd inning and another 3 in the
4th to put the game out of reach for Dallas with a final
score of 11-0. Game 2, Southwestern started off hot and stayed hot,
putting up a total of 16 runs in the first three innings, four of
which were off of a grand slam by Michele Ramos. The final score
was 16-0. On Sunday Southwestern once again started off strong,
scoring every inning. Dallas was able to push runs across the board
in the 4th and 5th innings, but Southwestern
won the game 13-3 in 5 innings. The final game of the series was
won by the Pirates with a score of 15-0 in 5 complete innings, with
another grand slam by Stacy Rosengren.
Trinity did not play any games last week, after a mid-week
doubleheader with Mary Hardin-Baylor was postponed due to weather
in the San Antonio area. The Tigers resume play with the postponed
matchup against UMHB on Tuesday evening, followed by a four-game
SCAC series against Centenary College on Saturday and Sunday.
