LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball play began as Trinity, Southwestern, Centenary and Dallas all opened up the 2013 conference schedule with four game weekend sets March 23-24.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College (3-15) had the week off. The
Kangaroos return to action on March 29-30 when they host conference
leading Trinity for a four game SCAC series. Friday’s
double-header starts at 1 p.m. with Sunday’s double-header
set for a first pitch at 12 p.m.
Centenary posted a 1-7 record on the busiest week of the
season. The Ladies lone win came in a decision over SCAC leader
Southwestern to open the four-game series. Lauren Swift led the
Ladies at the plate with a .450 average at the dish. The Beaumont,
Texas, native recorded a team-best nine hits and scored seven runs
in the contests. The senior also tallied a pair of three-run
homeruns in the final outing with the Pirates to tie her for the
team lead for the season. Swift also drove in nine runs during the
outings - also to lead the team.
Dallas (1-17, 0-4 SCAC) went 0-4 on the week versus Trinity University in San Antonio. The Crusaders fell 11-0 and 17-0 on Saturday, before dropping Sunday's games 16-3 and 13-1. Head coach Amber Conner's squad will host six games this week -- Midland University-Neb. (Thursday, 5 p.m. 2x7); Centenary College of Louisiana (Friday, 3 p.m. 2x7; Saturday, 1 p.m. 2x7).
Over the weekend, Southwestern went 3-1 with
against the Centenary Ladies. Day 1 Southwestern dropped the first
game to Centenary with a score of 10-7. With 2 homeruns one of
which was a 3-run homerun, in the 7th inning,
Southwestern tied the game 7 all. Centenary followed up with a
3-run homerun of their own to win the game. The second game began
and Southwestern jumped out with 11 runs and held the Ladies
scoreless. The game was postponed until Sunday due to rain. On
Sunday, Southwestern finished the first game with a final score of
25-1. The Pirates also defeated Centenary twice more on Sunday with
final scores of 12-1 and 9-6. Southwestern hit a total of 10
homeruns on the weekend with 2 of those homeruns being grand slams,
one from Kayla Irvin and the other from Stacy
Rosengren.
Trinity opened SCAC play with a four-game SCAC sweep at
home against the University of Dallas over the weekend. The four
victories put Trinity in first place in the SCAC standings. The
Tigers outscored Dallas 57-4 in the four wins, including a pair of
shutouts (11-0 and 17-0) to start the series on Saturday afternoon.
In the series finale, Brooke Sanchez broke the school record for
stolen bases in one game, swiping a total of four. She also tied
the Tiger record for runs scored in a game, also with four. Sanchez
also recently became the 15th player in school history to record
100 or more hits in a career, joining teammate Megan Russell (147
hits) on the list. Trinity will play six times in the coming week,
starting with a home doubleheader against Midland University on
Wednesday. The Tigers then resume SCAC play with a four-game series
on the road against Austin College.
