LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity University and Southwestern University split their much anticipated four game weekend series as the Tigers took the first two games on Saturday before the Pirates evened the series with two wins on Sunday. Trinity and Southwestern are the top two seeds for the 2013 SCAC Softball tournament.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went 4-2 last week, falling
twice to the University of Texas-Dallas before sweeping a four game
series with the University of Dallas over the weekend. The team
fell by scores of 8-0 and 11-6 to UTD before cruising to wins of
13-3, 5-1, 16-2, and 10-1 against Dallas. Jessica Baker batted a
blistering .524 with a pair of doubles and six RBI and added three
steals, and Briana Hernandez hit .350 while belting three homers
and driving in 12 runs on the week. Charlotte Trudell hit .500 with
a triple and also added her first career home run, and Chelsea
Delaney hit .333 with two homers and six RBI. Sam Matulis and
Sophia Hernandez each went 2-1 on the mound, with Hernandez racking
up 20 strikeouts while Matulis struck out 14 against just three
walks.
Centenary went 2-0 last week against Dallas. Emma Viskozi
led the Ladies at the plate with a .600 batting average. Viskozi
logged a pair of doubles and drove in the winning run in the opener
of the doubleheader. Lysni Unruh picked up both wins in the circle
combining for 16 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched. Unruh allowed
just nine hits in the doubleheader sweep. Centenary hosts Dallas on
Monday as the regular season closes prior to the SCAC Tournament
over the weekend.
Dallas (5-27, 0-14 SCAC) went 0-6 on the week
at home. The Crusaders were bested 2-1 in a pair of contests by
Centenary College of Louisiana on Wednesday evening in Irving,
Texas. Head coach Amber Conner's squad then dropped four games over
the weekend to Austin College. The 'Roos prevailed 13-3 and 5-1 on
Saturday, before claiming 16-2 and 10-1 wins Sunday. The latter was
senior day for the Crusaders, and the team honored senior shortstop
Brittany Castro -- a four-year letter-winner -- before the start of
game two. Dallas will play make-up games tonight versus Centenary
in Shreveport, La, and will then host the 2013 SCAC Softball
Championship (Friday-Sunday).
Southwestern faced off against Trinity on Saturday and
played two well fought games that ultimately resulted in the Tigers
coming out on top. In game 1, Trinity was able to hold Southwestern
scoreless, while they manufactured 2 runs in both the fifth and
seventh innings. The final score was 4-0. The second game was a
tight game with Trinity putting 1 run up in the first inning and
Southwestern holding them scoreless until the 10th inning ITB.
Southwestern tied the game 1-1 in the seventh inning and held
Trinity until the 10th. The Pirates were unable to answer back and
Trinity won 2-1. On Sunday, Southwestern played the Trinity Tigers
and this time the Pirates came out on top. Trinity put up 1 run in
the first inning again, but Southwestern answered back with a
lead-off homerun by Karen Ramirez in the first and 2 more runs in
the second. Once Southwestern took the lead, the held it with a
final score of 6-2. In game 2, Southwestern came out early and put
up 2 runs in the first and 1 more in the fourth. Trinity also put
up 1 in the fourth and then two more in the fifth to tie the game
up. Southwestern held the Tigers for the remainder of the game and
pushed a run across in the seventh to win the game 4-3.
Trinity split a four-game road series at Southwestern
University last week, clinching the top seed at the SCAC
Championships Tournament. The Tigers swept Saturday’s
doubleheader to secure the top position in the tournament. The
Division Championship is the second in a row for the Tigers, who
prior to last season, had not won the division since 2008. Trinity
will open the SCAC Tournament against either Centenary or Dallas on
Friday, April 26, at 4 p.m. The Tigers swept both teams during the
regular season.
