Complete Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic conference baseball season is underway as four of the league's eight teams were able to hit the diamond prior to a weekend arctic blast forced the cancelation of many games.

The Austin College (1-1) baseball team was the first SCAC squad to hit the diamond in 2021 and opened with a split at the University of Ozarks on Feb. 7. The 'Roos took game one 7-5 before falling 5-4 in game two. Nick Flynn and Jake Webster each went 2-for-4 to lead the 'Roos in their game one victory and Max Danielsen picked up the win in relief, allowing no runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. Jackson Chaviers came on to close the door on the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning to earn the save. In game two, Austin College scored three in the top of the first but could only manage one more run in dropping the 5-4 decision. Webster stayed hot with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, while Zack Mahoney and Justin Alphonse each picked up a pair of hits. Alphonse's two-run single in the top of the first game the 'Roos an early 3-0 lead.

Centenary (2-0) opened its season with a dominating 6-1 win over Louisiana College at home on Tuesday afternoon and then finished the week unbeaten as the Gents beat East Texas Baptist University, 7-4, on Friday. With Friday's win over ETBU, the Gents have now won 11 of their last 15 games dating back to last season and are now 5-1 in their last six home games. Centenary pitching has been superb through the season's first two games, allowing just one earned run in 18 innings with only three walks and 14 strikeouts. In the Louisiana College game, Centenary used eight different pitchers to hold the Wildcats at bay. In the ETBU victory, Connor Lee worked 5.0 innings and allowed no earned runs with four strikeouts to earn the victory. Parker Primeaux pitched the final four innings to pick up the save. The Gents' offense has been equally as impressive, collecting 25 hits and 13 runs in its two games. Chris Haggard, Ben Bridges and Luke Royal each had four hits in the team's first two games and Preston Ludwick has a team-high four RBIs. The Gents have now collected at least 10 hits in a game in eleven of their last 15 games dating back to last season.

St. Thomas (1-0) opened its 2021 campaign with a 9-5 victory over Howard Payne in a contest that was called in the fifth inning due to inclement weather. The Celts scored eight runs in the first two innings that proved enough to hold off the Yellow Jackets. St. Thomas' Parker Edwards went 2-for-2 in the contest, hitting two home runs and recording four RBIs. He is just the second player in program history to post a multiple home run game. Hunter Pachal also produced a 2-for-2 effort at the dish, driving in one run. Despite not earning the decision, right-hander Landon Murray struck out seven batters in his collegiate debut. Caleb Desilets worked the final 1.1 innings and picked up the win in relief.

The University of Dallas (0-2) baseball team lost its opening two games of the season to Sul Ross State in its doubleheader on Saturday. In game one, a tight 4-3 game was blown open by Sul Ross in a nine run bottom of the 4th that saw the Lobos take a 12-4 lead. The Lobos would eventually win the game 13-6. In game two, Sul Ross jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. After quiet innings in the third and fourth, Dallas and Sul Ross began trading runs every inning for the rest of the game. The big damage for UD came in the sixth and seventh innings off of big hits by Michael Andersen and Grady Birmingham for seven combined runs, resulting in a 10-9 lead. Sul Ross tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, and won the game, 12-11, on a walkoff home run. In his first series with Dallas, Andersen went 2-for-4 with two triples, three RBIS, three runs scored, and two walks. In game two, Zachary Taylor went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Birmingham recorded three RBIs.

The SCAC baseball season continues this weekend with seven teams in action, including Schreiner, Southwestern and Texas Lutheran scheduled to make their season-debuts. Schriener is scheduled to host a three-game set against Mary Hardin-Baylor, Southwestern is set to travel and play a three-game set against Sul Ross State and Texas Lutheran is scheduled to host Hardin-Simmons in a three-game series.
