LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The final week of the 2021 SCAC regular season established the seeds for next weekend's conference championship tournament, which is scheduled to begin Friday, May 7 at The Depot at Cleburne Station in Cleburne, Texas. Tournament Bracket
Top-ranked Trinity (25-5 overall; 12-2 SCAC) dropped a 2-1 non-conference decision to Texas Lutheran on Tuesday prior to having its three-game set against Southwestern washed away due to inclement weather in the Georgetown area. The Tigers will be the top seed for this weekend's conference tournament and begin play on Friday with a 1 p.m. game against No. 20 Centenary College.
Texas Lutheran (25-11; 15-3) defeated Trinity, 2-1, in non-conference play on Tuesday before taking two of three against 20th-ranked Centenary over the weekend to secure the second seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
Randy Huerta hit a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning which proved to be the game-winner against Trinity on Tuesday. After dropping the series opener, TLU bounced back to sweep Saturday's doubleheader against the Gents. In the Bulldogs' 14-4 win, Austin Colon registered four hits, three RBI, and two runs scored and Tyler Cauley was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI via a third inning home run. Right-hander Joe Burch improved to 6-1 overall with 6-1/3 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs, struck out one, and walked one. In the late game, TLU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and Cauley hit his second home run of the day (and 40th of his career) in the fourth to push the lead to 7-0. The Bulldogs would hold on for the 8-4 win as Nolan Tenpas notched his third win of the season with 1-1/3 innings of relief work.
In Centenary's 5-4 game one win over TLU, the Gents recorded their 30th win of the season as right-hander Preston Ludwick won his league-best eighth game of the season, working 6.2 innings and allowing four runs, only two of which were earned. He struck out six and walked two. The No. 20 Centenary baseball team defeated the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, 5-4, on Friday night in the opener of a key Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series featuring two of the league's best teams at Shehee Stadium. The Gents (30-9; 14-7) will be the fourth-seed at this weekend's tournament.
Southwestern (18-17; 13-5) dropped a pair of non-conference games to Concordia University Texas prior to its weekend series against Trinity being washed out. The Pirates will be the No. 3 seed at this year's championship and open against TLU on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
In other action this week, four conference teams ended regular season play as St. Thomas (17-16; 6-15) took two of three from Schreiner (14-26; 7-14) and Dallas (12-18; 8-11) swept a pair from Austin College (5-22; 1-19) prior to their Sunday contest being rained out.
