Destini Powell, Centenary College, Player of the Week (Week 5)

DESTINI POWELL OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a junior guard from Minden, La., has been named the SCAC Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, November 29 through Sunday, December 5. (Women's Basketball Weekly Release - Week 5)

Powell poured in a career-high 33 points to lead the Ladies to an 89-82 road win last Saturday against SAA foe Birmingham-Southern. She connected on 11-of-26 attempts from the field in 39 minutes of action, including 3-for-8 from three-point range. Powell also made 8-of-11 from the free throw line and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. The 33 points is the most scored by a Ladies player in a single game in the division III era (2012-present) and is tied for the third-most points in a single game in program history and is the most points scored by a Centenary player in 17 years. Penny Brill scored 33 on Feb. 16, 1984 and Laura Kizyte did so on Nov. 19, 2004. Powell's previous career-high in points was 26 which she accomplished twice. She did so as a freshman on Feb. 8, 2020 at Texas Lutheran and last weekend at Ozarks in a 79-58 loss on Nov. 27. Saturday marked Powell's first double-double of the season and the third time she has reached double figures.

Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Junior guard Anna Fanelli of Colorado College dished out 16 assists, scored 10 pointss and grabbed eight rebounds while helping the Tigers post a 1-1 record last week. During the 61-50 victory over St. Thomas in the conference opener for each team, Fanelli dished out eight assists and became the fifth player in program history to record 250 or more. She finished the game with 255 and the weekend with 263. Freshman guard Canai McPherson of Dallas was instrumental for the Crusaders this weekend, dropping 26 points in their 60-47 win over Millsaps. Besides leading all players in scoring, it was also the young freshman's fifth game scoring 20 points or more, and her fourth with 25-plus. After a tough shooting performance by both teams in the first half, McPherson came out and scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half. Senior guard Gabby Ivarra of Schreiner scored nine points, grabbed two rebounds and accounted for one steal in the Mountaineers lone contest last week against St. Edward’s.
