COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado College men’s lacrosse team hasn’t experienced many close shaves on the field this season, but it certainly had one off the field on March 19.

That’s when 11 members of the program shaved their heads to help raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation during the annual event at Armstrong Hall on the Colorado College campus.

The Tigers contributed almost $2,000 and helped raise awareness for childhood cancer research in what has become an annual tradition.

“Evan Spirito, who was on the team last year, is battling cancer, and a lot of guys have family members who have been touched by the disease,” said team organizer Buck McKenna, who shaved his head for the third consecutive season. “We plan to make this an annual event.”

McKenna also led the team by raising $500. Nick Koch was second with $360 raised, followed by $125 from team manager Zach Cohen, who also got buzzed.

The other shavees included Kyle Bishop, Whit Brighton, Toby Cohen, Chris Love, Chris Mahaney, James Mauk and Zach Pierce, and assistant coaches Michael Podgajny and Scott Popelar.

“All of our teammates came to the event and showed their support, and about 20 helped with donations,” McKenna said. “I would like to see everyone shave their heads next year. We’ll start recruiting our teammates a little earlier in the future.”

Each year, 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide. Cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada. The St. Baldrick's Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
