Emma White, Southwestern University, Volleyball - Character & Community

EMMA WHITE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior outside hitter on the women's volleyball team from Lucas, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning October 11.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

On the volleyball court, outside hitter Emma White is everywhere. The junior from Lucas, Texas, is a six-rotation player who leads the No. 16-ranked Pirates in kills (192), kills per set (3.00), and service aces (28), as well as second in total digs (221).

Off the court, White is more into assists, mentoring children at St. Helen’s Catholic Church as a youth leader in the middle school ministry program.

“I work with a lot of the girls who play volleyball, so they think me and [teammate] Katelyn Whitehead are kind of a big deal,” White says, chuckling. “I was in middle school once, and the things you go through just dealing with popularity, social status, how girls can be, just growing and changing, dealing with self-esteem and making friends, I really enjoy helping them through that and how to view themselves through the lens of Christ and not the lens of the world.”

White’s faith is an important part of who she is, which has also made her an important part of the culture Southwestern head volleyball coach Don Flora is building in “The Pirates Way.”

“Coach Flora is always talking about the Pirates way, and for me that means supporting each other and treating each other like family and loving each other through thick and thin,” White says. “Working with these kids has really opened my eyes to how I can apply that to my life and the people I encounter every day. It’s taught me more empathy and grace.”

As a youth leader in the ministry program, White helps the middle school kids through life and learning what it means to be Catholic. She leads community building efforts there, running small group and large group discussions, skits, and fellowship through music and games.

“I think it’s really important for college students to get involved in the community,” White says. “Georgetown has so much to offer. This community is so loving and supportive of us, and giving back to it is very important.”
