NATALIE MCCOY OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior guard on the women's basketball team from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 7.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

McCoy’s time at Austin College has led to tremendous success both on and off the basketball court. The All-Conference point guard for the ‘Roo women’s hoops team has cut down the nets as a SCAC champion, and been a conference tournament MVP.

McCoy has been active both in Sherman and back home in San Antonio, as well, serving as the chair of Austin College’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and working as the athletics department’s female representative on the conference SAAC.

She’s also attended NCAA leadership events, and last fall organized a women’s leadership luncheon for female student leaders on the Austin College campus. That event featured guest speakers from throughout the community, with local attorneys, business owners, and the county’s Justice of the Peace, among others. Through this event, she helped her fellow Austin College students learn about furthering their leadership and network with members of the community, with several of her classmates earning internship and further opportunities through the event.

Last summer, McCoy also worked with her mother at St. Vincent De Paul in San Antonio, doing community service work to help school children heading back to the classroom. That involved putting together back-to-school bags for low-income families, providing all of the supplies required by the local school district.

This fall McCoy is headed to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as one of only 11 people accepted into the University of North Carolina’s prestigious Sports Administration master’s program.
