SUWANEE, Ga. - As a number of SCAC teams took the week off to focus on final exams just a handful of non-conference games highlighted a light schedule of basketball in the conference. This week the SCAC returns to conference play for the final time before the calendar switches over to 2012.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College fell short in their lone game of
the week against Webster University, shooting 52.6% from three and
getting a career best 24 points from Christina Kime in a 67-63 loss
on Sunday. Shayna Clardy, Angeleena Young and Jenna Longo each hit
two threes in the game. The 'Roos will be looking to get their
second win of the year tonight against Fontbonne.
Birmingham-Southern played only one game this week,
returning home for the first time since Nov. 19 with a 76-61 win
against New Orleans on Sunday. Junior Caroline King scored a
game-high 21 points, and she and junior Alex Adams led the team
with eight rebounds apiece. Senior Kristian Moody and junior
Melanie Short recorded 12 points apiece, and Adams scored 11
points. King and senior Sam Davidson also led with four assists
each, and sophomore Stephanie Stanley led the Panthers with three
steals. BSC resumes conference action this weekend on the road,
facing Centre on Friday and Sewanee on Sunday.
Centre did not play last week as the Colonels
were taking exams. Centre returns to the court this weekend hosting
a pair of SCAC contests between Oglethorpe and
Birmingham-Southern.
Colorado College dropped to 4-5 on the
season after suffering road losses to George Fox University and
Linfield College. In the Tigers 69-27 loss to Georg Fox, CC shot a
season-low 25.0 percent on the floor and made only one shot from
long range. Colorado College adjusted its shooting in the second
game of the week, hitting a season-high 11 shots from long range
for a 52.4 three-point percentage, but that wasn’t enough as
the Tigers fell to Linfield, 69-60. Senior Becky Luetjen and junior
Hannah Hoopingarner led CC against Linfield with a team-high 20
points each. Luetjen led the Tigers over the weekend averaging 13.5
points, seven rebounds and 2.5 assists. Hoopingarner averaged 12
points and made 6-of-12 shots from long range over the weekend.
Colorado College returns home for a midweek game against Johnson
and Wales University on Tuesday at 7 p.m., before traveling to
Conway, Ark. for a conference matchup against Hendrix on Saturday
at 12 p.m.
Dallas won their only contest of the week, knocking off
Southwestern Adventist University, 66-39, Wednesday evening in
Keene, Texas. Dallas had a 32-20 advantage entering halftime,
before eventually winning by 27 points. Three entered double-figure
scoring for Dallas against the Lady Knights. Junior guard Kylie
Yoshimura netted a game-high 15 points, and freshman guard Jordon
Baker contributed 14 points, while freshman guard Marleyna
Bustamante amassed 12 points. Sophomore post Christy Allen also had
a stellar effort for Dallas, totaling 10 rebounds and eight points.
The Lady Crusaders, having been victorious in two of their previous
three games, will head on the road this week for two SCAC games --
Friday vs. Trinity University (5 p.m.) and Saturday vs.
Southwestern University (4 p.m.).
Hendrix was off the past week for finals. They will host
Colorado College on Saturday at Grove Gymnasium.
Millsaps took the week off to focus on final exams for
the semester. The Majors will return to action this week with three
non-conference tilts starting Monday night at home against
Rust.
Oglethorpe won their only contest of the week
over Covenant College (W, 60-39). The Petrels used a swarming
defense that forced 26 turnovers and held the Scots to 26% shooting
to guide their path to victory. The lead changed hands five times
in the first half, but when it last switched into Oglethorpe's
favor late in the half, it would never return to Covenant. That's
because the Petrels turned a 17-16 deficit with 3:44 to play into a
26-17 halftime lead on the heels of a 10-0 spurt. The run began
with an assisted jumper from freshman Christian Langston and was
followed by Kyana Jenkins grabbing an offensive rebound and finding
Sarah Jones open for a three. Following a Scot turnover courtesy of
Oglethorpe's pressure defense, Katie Weeks drilled a jumper to up
the lead to six points. Mareva Bone then made a steal on the other
end and found Jones for another deep three and suddenly the lead
was nine at the break. The momentum carried over into the second
half as the Petrels tallied the first 8 points to extend the run
that bridged the half to 18-0. Oglethorpe eventually opened
up a 39-18 lead after two free throws from Riley Cerone to cap a
23-1 scoring outburst by the Petrels. The Scots briefly whittled
the lead down to 13 points but back-to-back three-pointers from
Jones quelled any notion of a comeback. Jones led the Petrels with
14 points on the night on 5-of-12 shooting from the field,
including 4-of-9 from downtown. Bone also demonstrated her fine
all-around game with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and three
steals. Weeks and Cerone added 7 points apiece in the runaway win.
Oglethorpe is now 3-5 on the season and will have time off to focus
on exams before squaring off with Sewanee in Tennessee on December
16 at 6:00 p.m.
Rhodes rallied from a 15 point first half deficit to beat
Rust College 67-63 in a non-conference game played at Mallory
Gymnasium, on Tuesday, December 6th. Senior forward Sharwil Bell
led all Lynx scorers with 17 points and sophomore center Amy
Handelman added a season high 14 points to fuel the second half
comeback. Trailing 33-18 with just over four minutes to play in the
first half, the Lynx ended the half on a 11-2 run to cut the margin
to 35-29 at half. The Lynx took their first lead of the game at
42-41, on a driving layup by freshman guard Catherine Eckert with
11 minutes to play. Eckert scored seven points and was a perfect
3-of-3 from the field. Freshman guard Sarah Johnson added 11
points, three rebounds and two assists and iced the game with two
free throws with 0.2 seconds to play. Junior guards Jaime Maxey and
Sarah Womack each scored eight points as the Lynx improved to 4-3
on the season. Rhodes will take the next week off for final
examinations and return to the floor for a game with Berry College
in Mallory Gymnasium on Friday, December 16th.
Led by Alex Ginsburg's 14 points and 10 rebounds, the
Sewanee women's basketball team ended its
three-game losing streak with an impressive 82-57 win over Hiwassee
Tuesday inside Juhan Gymnasium. With the win, Sewanee improved its
overall record to 4-4. The Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 lead after
junior Heather Baier hit a three with only three minutes off the
clock. Sewanee would see its advantage extend to 26, when junior
Dana Middleton made the score 43-17 with a layup right before the
half. Out of the intermission things continued to go well for the
Tigers. Sewanee scored three field goals, within the first 60
seconds, to push its lead to 32. After Hiwassee's Bethany Allen
made the score 50-29, Sewanee never allowed the Tigers to get
closer than 21 points the rest of the way. Middleton led the purple
and gold with 16 points and nine assists. Baier,Logan Miller, and
Paige Lowe all netted nine points for the Tigers. This week the
Tigers continue SCAC play when Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern
come to the Mountain Friday and Sunday.
Southwestern traveled to Fort Worth to face a talented
NAIA squad, Texas Wesleyan. The Pirates battled back from 12 down
in the second half to tie the game on Anna Fareed's layup with
seconds left to push the game into overtime. SU wasn't able to find
the basket they needed in the extra frame as they fell 84-77. The
loss drops Southwestern to 4-4 on the year and they remain at 1-1
in the SCAC. They return to conference action this weekend with a
pair of home games, facing Austin College on Friday night and the
University of Dallas on Saturday.
After a week off from games, Trinity returns to
action this week against the University of Dallas and Austin
College. The Tigers will play their first home games in the SCAC on
Friday and Saturday, and will not play again until after Christmas.
Trinity dropped its first two conference games on the road, losing
by a total of eight points at Hendrix and Colorado College.
