Centre Wins Fifth SCAC Women's Basketball Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Behind a team-high 14 points from SCAC tournament MVP Maggie Prewitt, the Centre College Colonels won their fifth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference womens basketball championship and first since 2001 with a 60-48 win over Millsaps in the championship game. With the win the Colonels (24-3) earn the league's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. Centre will await its matchup when the selections are announced on Monday afternoon.

Prewitt, who was named SCAC Player of the Year, was 4 of 7 from the floor and 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. Centre jumped out to a 31-23 halftime lead and led by as many as 15 points late in the second half. Paige Baechle and Chelsea Beham each chipped in with 12 points in the win.

Millsaps, which ended the season at 22-6, advanced to the SCAC tournament championship game for the first time in the 10-year history of the event. The Majors were led by Shante Morton's 17-point, 13-rebound double-double. Velvet Johnson added 14 points for Millsaps.

All-Tournament team honors went to Centre's Prewitt, Baechle as well as Millsaps' Morton and Janice Okeke. Rounding out the team was Southwestern University's Chelsea Leeder.
