Women's Basketball Recap (Week 13) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The seeds are set for the 10th annual Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) women's basketball tournament. Centre College and Southwestern University earned the top seeds in the Eastern and Western Divisions respectively as the tournament is set to begin Friday, February 24th in Birmingham, Alabama.

The remaining Eastern Division seeds are #2 Millsaps College, #3 Rhodes College and #4 Birmingham-Southern College.

The Western Division remaining seeds are #2 Colorado College, #3 Trinity University and #4 Hendrix College.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College wrapped up its season with a split against Southwestern and Trinity, falling 80-57 to the Pirates before ending the season on a high note with a 78-68 win over the Tigers. The ‘Roos won three of their final four games this season to finish with an overall record of 4-21. Kersti Marusich had a huge game against Southwestern, scoring 24 points and adding 11 rebounds in the losing effort, and against Trinity, Christina Kime notched a triple-double with 23 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in the victory. The ‘Roos also got a career-high 19 points from Allison Taylor, 16 points from Marusich and 14 from Angeleena Young.

Birmingham-Southern
capped off the regular season this week with a 69-51 win against Oglethorpe, ending on a three-game win streak. Juniors Caroline King and Alex Adams led with 17 points each, and senior Ashton Spurgin scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Senior Kristian Moody also dished out nine assists in the win. The Panthers are set to host the 2012 SCAC Championship this weekend, playing as the fourth seed in the East Division in their first-ever NCAA Division III postseason appearance, taking on No. 1 West seed Southwestern on Friday at 6 p.m. at Homewood High School in Homewood, Ala.

Centre
clinched the regular season SCAC Championship on Friday against Millsaps. It was Pink Night, with proceeds going to breast cancer research as part of the Play 4 Kay initiative, and Centre fed off the energy of the loudest home crowd of the year to defeat Millsaps by 15, 66-51. Maggie Prewitt burned Millsaps for 32 points on 10-15 shooting, Lauren Huter pulled down 12 rebounds and Chelsea Benham scored 12 points in the victory. Centre nearly doubled up the Majors on the boards with a 39-22 rebounding advantage. On Senior Day against Rhodes, Centre built a big lead at halftime, but the Lynx chipped away with hot shooting while the Colonels made mistakes they hadn’t made all year. Costly turnovers and misses from the free throw line kept Rhodes in the game and clutch shooting propelled the Lynx to a 58-56 win. Huter posted a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Prewitt scored 21.

Colorado College ended the 2011-12 regular season with a 62-46 victory over Hendrix College to finish second in the SCAC West Division. With the win, CC finished the season with a 14-11 record and a 10-6 record in conference play. The Tigers honored seniors Becky Luetjen, Jordy Stephenson and Jenny Knapp in their final home game of their career on Saturday. Luetjen led the team with 19 points and three steals. Stephenson led the team tying her career-high six assists and added nine rebounds and six points. Knapp finished with nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from behind the arc against the Warriors. CC grabbed 53 rebounds to Hendrix’s 26 rebounds to help earn the win and produce its sixth straight game of grabbing 53 rebounds or more. Freshman Shelby Hanssen led the team with 11 rebounds, while junior Sarah Gunkel added another nine rebounds to aid the Tigers’ defense. Colorado College will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the SCAC Basketball Tournament and will take on Rhodes College at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Dallas
(9-16, 4-12 SCAC) has concluded their season after a 1-1 week in SCAC play at the Maher Athletic Center. Friday brought Trinity University to Irving, Texas. Dallas boasted a 39-37 lead by halftime, and netted an 84-77 victory thanks largely to 56 percent (14-of-25) second-half shooting. Kylie Yoshimura amassed a game-high 33 points and seven assists, while three other Lady Crusaders entered double-figure scoring -- Lauren Jumaoas (11 points), Marleyna Bustamante (10 points) and Jordon Baker (10 points). With the win and a loss by Hendrix College, the Lady Crusaders needed to win over Southwestern University on Friday to secure a berth in the SCAC Tournament. Prior to the game, senior guard Christina Rampellini was honored as Dallas' lone senior. Though Dallas had a 35-34 lead at the break, Southwestern prevailed in the end, 75-68. The Lady Pirates shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the field in the second half. Chelsea Leeder had a game-high 27 points for Southwestern. Four Dallas players entered double-figure scoring -- Brooke Hagemann (17 points), Bustamante (16 points), Christy Allen (14 points) and Yoshimura (10 points).

Hendrix
picked up a 70-62 non-conference home win over Rust College on Wednesday. Hendrix had four players score in double-digits, including sophomore forward Jamie Tate with 14 points and 14 rebounds and senior guard Avery Roller hit five outside shots to score 14 as well. Senior guard Katy Ashley-Pauley had 13 points and seven assists and senior guard Anna Roane also netted 13. In Saturday’s regular season finale at Colorado College, the Warriors lost 64-46. Roane scored 10 points to go with a career-high four steals. Ashley-Pauley had nine points and five rebounds and freshman forward Maggie Biggs-Scribner added eight points. Senior guard Samantha Devlin recorded season-bests four assists and four steals. Tate, the nation’s second leading rebounder, was held to six points and six boards, breaking a streak of 19 consecutive games with 10 or more rebounds. Hendrix enters the SCAC Championship Tournament as the fourth seed out of the west division and will play the top seed out of the east Centre on Friday.

In what has been a memorable 2011-12 season for the Millsaps Majors Women's Basketball Team, the team reached another milestone on Sunday afternoon against Sewanee as they became the third team in the history of the program to achieve 20 wins in a season. The Majors now prepare for the next step, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. It wasn’t all great for Millsaps, they started the weekend in Danville, Kentucky on Friday to take on the Centre Colonels in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Eastern Division Standings. Millsaps struggled for one of the first times on the road, as the Colonels were able to defeat Millsaps 66-51. Freshman Velvet Johnson led Millsaps with 16 points while junior Lovie Love added 12 points. Centre's Maggie Prewitt led all scorers with 32. The Majors struggled on the boards as they were outrebounded 39-22. The Colonels also got to the free throw line 23 times to Millsaps' 12. Centre clinched the Eastern Division crown with the win over Millsaps. However, thanks to some help from Sewanee, the Majors locked up the second seed as the Tigers defeated Rhodes. The Majors took on those Tigers on Sunday and used a tremendous defensive effort, which included 15 forced turnovers in the first half to take the 55-46 win. Love played maybe one of her best games of the season as she scored 17 points while adding seven steals and three assists. Junior Shante Morton added 10 points while senior Janice Okeke picked up nine points, 15 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. The Majors prepare for the SCAC Tournament, which is set to begin on Friday, as they will take on the No. 3 team in the Western Division, the Trinity Tigers in Birmingham, Alabama. The Majors defeated Trinity in San Antonio on January 29th, 71-57. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

Oglethorpe
closed out the 2011-12 season by losing at Birmingham-Southern (L, 69-51) on Saturday night. The Panthers used a 23-6 run in the second half to turn a tight three-point contest into an easy home court win. Despite falling behind 16-3 at the outset of the contest, the Petrels managed to fight back against the Panthers with a prolonged 19-8 run to close the gap to 24-22 with 2:55 to play in the first half. Sarah Giles and Sarah Jones combined to score 8 and 5 points, respectively, in the spurt as the Petrels managed to rattle the Panthers a bit. Southern tallied the last 5 points of the half to head into the locker room with a 29-22 advantage. Oglethorpe got three straight defensive stops to start the second half and used buckets from Sarah Giles and Morghan Brandon to make the score 29-26 with 18:20 to play. The Petrels, however, would not score during the next 6 minutes of the contest as the Panthers built a 40-26 lead with 12:30 left. Southern then put the game away by putting together another 15-6 burst that extended the lead out to 20 at the 8:23 mark. Giles led the Petrels with 12 points, 4 rebounds and three blocks on the night. Jones added 10 points while Riley Cerone made 3-of-5 from beyond the arc for 9 points in the loss. Oglethorpe finishes their season 8-17 overall and 5-11 in SCAC competition.

Rhodes
rallied from a 16 point second half deficit, to upend Centre College 58-56 in a SCAC game played in Danville, KY on Tom Bryant Court, Sunday, February 19th. Centre has been ranked as high as 19th in the nation recently by the USA Today/ ESPN Coaches Division III Poll. Trailing 37-21 with 18:43 to play, the Lynx caught fire from the field, led by sophomore guard Lauren Avant. Avant hit 3 second half three point field goals to spark the comeback and finished the game with a team high 19 points and made 5 of 9 three point field goal attempts. Senior forward Sharwil Bell added 16 points and 6 rebounds as Rhodes became the only SCAC team in 2011-12 to win at Centre. The Lynx shot 15 of 29 from the field as a team in the second half for 51.7%. Junior center Amy Handelman added 7 points and a team high 8 rebounds as Rhodes ended their two game losing streak right before the SCAC tournament opens this weekend, in Birmingham, AL. Rhodes improves to 17-7 overall on the season and 11-5 in SCAC play. The Lynx will open the SCAC tournament as a three seed and face Colorado College, this upcoming Friday, February 24th at Homewood High School, at 3pm in Birmingham, AL.

Sewanee
dropped both its games this past weekend. In their final contests this season, the Tigers loss to long-time rival Rhodes, Friday, and Millsaps on Sunday. Sewanee finishes its 2011-12 campaign with a 10-14 overall record.

Southwestern
secured their top spot in the SCAC West with two wins on the road to close out regular season action. The Pirates sit 14-11 on the year and 11-5 in the SCAC. Friday night Southwestern had four players score in double-digits as they easily defeated Austin College 80-57. SU was +18 in rebounding margin and committed just 13 turnovers during the game. Saturday they headed to the University of Dallas and the Crusaders weren't going down without a fight as they needed a win to get in the postseason tournament. UD led most of the game and all of the second half until Chelsea Leeder took the game over, scoring 10 unanswered points in the final two minutes to catapult the Pirates to a 75-68 win. Southwestern will enter the tournament as the #1 seed in the west and draw #4 east seed and conference tournament host Birmingham-Southern. The game is scheduled for 6:00 pm CT at Homewood High School in Birmingham, AL on Friday night.

Trinity
suffered a pair of road losses to close out the regular season, but the Tigers still held on to the #3 seed in the SCAC West Division. After beating both Dallas and Austin in San Antonio earlier this season, the Tigers were forced into a regular season split with the two teams after this weekend’s results. It marks the second straight season that Trinity split with Austin College, after losing both games against the ‘Roos in 2009-10. Trinity is now 7-2 against Dallas under Head Coach Amie Bradley. Trinity will face off against Millsaps in the opening round of the SCAC Tournament on Friday at 8:00 p.m. The Tigers lost 71-57 in the only meeting with the Majors this season. Trinity is 14-7 all-time in SCAC Tournament, having won two conference titles.
