Birmingham-Southern took three close matches on the chin this week, falling 2-0 at Auburn-Montgomery on Monday before dropping both home matches at the BSC Soccer Classic. All three matches were close, with BSC giving up just four goals in three games, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize on their chances and could never get on the smiling side of the scoreboard. In their first game of the classic, they outshot Mississippi College 14-10 but fell 1-0. In the classic final Amber Hernandez played brilliantly, collecting 13 saves on the match. Berry College got the match’s only goal off a ricocheted ball from of a mass of bodies in front of the net. Coach Walton was positive, calling all three matches good experience for his young team. They will try to rebound this weekend as they host Emory University on Friday before traveling to Alabama State on Sunday.

Centre
dropped two tough matches this past weekend in the DePauw Women’s Soccer Showcase. On Friday night against Wittenberg, the game remained scoreless until the 89th minute of play. Wittenberg was able to gather a miscleared ball in Centre’s penalty box which resulted in the late goal. Saturday evening, despite a solid effort, Centre fell 2-0 to Ohio Northern University. After the first goal was scored, Centre pushed more numbers into the attack in an effort to find the equalizer. It looked as if they might as Centre was able to get behind the Polar Bear’s defense and create a few dangerous crossing opportunities. However, in the 79th minute the Polar Bear’s broke through on a 1v1 and once again found the back of the net. Centre’s next match-ups will be at home when they face Hanover College Wednesday, September 16th and Denison University Saturday, September 19th.

HSU would score their first goal in the 42nd minute, when Erin Low assisted Austin Ricker inside the 18 yard box. Southwestern had a busy week of action at home against three ASC teams and went 2-1 on the week to move to 4-1 on the season. Tuesday, SU faced TLU and dominated the contest staying in the attacking third of the field for most of the game. Andi Miller got things started for Southwestern with a beautiful lofting ball from 35 yards out just 13 minutes into the match, and the Pirates never looked back winning 3-0. After a long rain delay on Friday SU and UTD were finally able to hit the field on a soggy afternoon in Central Texas. One goal in the first six minutes of the match by A.J. Andreola was all the Pirates needed as they won 1-0. First-year goal keeper Sarah Nonaka had three saves during the contest. Sunday, The Pirates faced a tough UT-Tyler team and despite have numerous opportunities in the second half to take the lead, SU couldn’t seem to find the back of the net and fell 2-1 in a highly contested match. Southwestern will hit the road again on Friday to face the University of Dallas at 2:00 pm.
