SUWANEE, Ga. - The Centre College Colonels struck the first upset of the 2009 season as they traveled to Greencastle, Ind. and jumped all over No. 20 DePauw University and then hung on for a 34-24 win. Austin College nearly notched an upset of their own as they lost a heart breaker at home to Millsaps, 31-30.

Austin College led
for nearly the entire game against defending Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference champion Millsaps College on Saturday, but a 17
point fourth quarter including a field goal by the Majors with 2:07
to play led to a heartbreaking 31-30 loss for the ’Roos at
Jerry Apple Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The ’Roos are now
2-1 on the year and 0-1 in SCAC play. Andy Braly finished the game
completing 8-of-14 passes for 180 yards and two interceptions while
adding 38 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and Ross Hasten
carried 20 times for 94 yards but was kept out of the endzone for
the first time this season. Greg Harrell had three catches for 103
yards and Braydon MaQuar added 43 yards on three receptions, while
Matt Finke led the team with 10 tackles. Austin College heads on
the road looking to rebound against Centre College next Saturday
with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. CST.
Birmingham-Southern was idle during week three.
The Panthers return to the gridiron Saturday, September 26 when
they host Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Rhodes
College. Rhodes will look to win its third-straight over
Birmingham-Southern since BSC brought back football in 2007. The
Lynx beat Birmingham-Southern last year in Memphis 35-7. BSC
quarterback Chandler Bares completed 5-of-10 passes for 56 yards
and one touchdown. Tay Walker caught the lone touchdown. The
Panthers were limited to just 49 total rushing yards on 45 attempts
(1.1 yards per attempt). Rhodes posted a commanding edge in total
yards, 369 to 127.
Centre jumped out to a 27-3 lead in the first half
and never looked back as the Colonels knocked off No. 20 DePauw
University 34-24 in the SCAC opener for both teams, Saturday, Sept.
19 in Greencastle, Ind. With the win, the Colonels improve to 3-0
for the first time since the 2005 season and begin 1-0 in the SCAC.
For the second week in a row, Centre was out-gained in total
offensive yards 395-367, but for the second week, the Colonels came
away with the win. The Centre defense finished the day forcing four
turnovers to extend their streak to 44 consecutive games of forcing
at least one turnover. The Colonels will return home to host Austin
College Saturday, Sept. 26.
DePauw fell behind Centre 27-3 at halftime and
34-3 headed into the fourth before scoring three fourth-quarter
touchdowns in a 34-24 loss to the Colonels. Centre's Matt Mazzanti
intercepted a Spud Dick pass and returned it 75 yards for a
touchdown on the first drive of the game and Centre never trailed
in the first SCAC contest for both schools. The Tigers outgained
Centre, 395-367, but had to total 246 yards in the fourth quarter
to do so. Dick completed 19-of-34 passes for 155 yards, while
Michael Engle was 14-of-24 for 196 yards and two scores in just
less than one quarter of play. Brayden Dahlstrom caught 10 passes
for 73 yards and Alex Koors had six for 146 yards and two
touchdowns. Adam Hawkins led the Tigers with 11 tackles, while
Jonathan Lambert and Alex Fitch each blocked extra-point attempts.
For the second straight week, Adam Hill averaged at least 40 yards
per punt. The loss snapped DePauw's six-game win streak and their
seven-game home win streak. Bryan Mulligan moved into a tie for
third place in school history with 168 receptions and fifth place
with 1,907 receiving yards.
Millsaps won its
ninth consecutive SCAC game and 11th straight on the road, coming
from behind to stun Austin College in Sherman, 31-30, thanks to a
game-winning 27-yard field goal from junior kicker Taylor Russolino
with 2:07 remaining. Millsaps trailed from start to finish, falling
behind 14-0 in the first quarter due to a pair of interceptions,
but rallied behind a 92-yard kick return from junior Michael
Galatas and 263 all-purpose yards from sophomore running back Shane
Bowser to steal a late win. Trailing 24-14 heading into the fourth
quarter, the Majors scored 17 points off a pair of Chris Graves
touchdown passes and benefited from a pair of Austin College
turnovers late to grab a road win away from the ‘Roos.
Millsaps (2-1, 1-0 SCAC) will return to Harper Davis Field this
weekend, playing host to Trinity University (3-0, 1-0) in a rematch
from the 2007 “Mississippi Miracle” loss.
Rhodes could not overcome six turnovers in their
40-19 loss to Trinity in their SCAC opener at Fargason Field.
Trinity held the football for 43:01 as the Lynx defense was on the
field most of the day. Senior linebacker Kendral Ellison did return
a fumble 73 yards for a score and cut the Trinity lead to 10-7 late
in the first quarter. The Tigers extended the lead to 27-7 at the
half with 17 2nd quarter points. Rhodes sophomore wider receiver
accounted for 141 yards of total offense, including 5 kickoff
returns for 128 yards. The Lynx defense has returned two
interceptions and a fumble recovery for touchdowns in the last two
weeks. The Lynx travel to Birmingham Southern this weekend.
Sewanee fell to regional powerhouse Hampden-Sydney
51-7 on Saturday. Robert Ratliff connected to Chalankis Brown on a
46-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter for the Tiger
touchdown. Brown also had an interception and three tackles on the
day. Michael Poarch rushed for 118 yards on the day for Sewanee and
former running back Trey Reliford led the Tiger defense with eight
total tackles. The Tigers are 0-2 and will host DePauw in SCAC play
this weekend.
Trinity opened up SCAC play with a 40-19 road win
over Rhodes College last Saturday, enjoying the team’s best
performance of the young season. The Tigers got a record-setting
performance from first-year kicker Garrett Biel. Biel, last
week’s SCAC Special Teams Player of the Week, kicked four
field goals in the game to break Trinity’s all-time record
for a single game. Biel had tied the previous record just last
week. He also kicked a 47-yard field goal in the game, which is the
fourth-longest field goal in school history. Backup QB Patrick
Dickinson entered the game in the first quarter, ending up a key
part of a trio of offensive stars in Saturday’s win. Chris
Baer rushed 16 times for 123 yards, and Riley Curry caught seven
passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Dickinson completed 18-22 for
265 yards and three touchdowns, completing passes to seven
different receivers in the game. Trinity’s defense forced six
turnovers – the most in a game since the 2006 season for the
Tigers. Tyler Barrett had 62 punt and kick return yards, as well as
adding 32 yards on an interception return, and a fumble recovery.
This week, Trinity finishes up its month-long road trip with a key
conference game at Millsaps College. The last time these two teams
met in Jackson, Miss. the Tigers won after pulling off the
“Mississippi Miracle” play at the end of the game.
Millsaps won last year’s game 56-27 in San Antonio.
