CONWAY, Ark. - Colorado College won the first-ever
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse
championship with a 19-2 victory over Hendrix College on Sunday
afternoon.
The Tigers won the title with a 4-0 conference record, one game
ahead of Birmingham-Southern College. CC finished the regular
season with a 10-2 overall mark and will wait until next Sunday to
learn if it receives an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III
Tournament.
Colorado College scored three times during the opening 55 seconds and led 8-0 before Ben Nelson put the Warriors on the board with 1:37 remaining in the first quarter.
Carson Christman paced the Tigers with personal single-game highs of six goals and seven points, and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal during the game's first minute.
Moses Taylor tied his season highs with five assists and eight points. He set up three of the first four goals, including Christman’s game winner.
Bart Cerf, Brendan Gangl and Hunter Sprole scored two goals apiece, while Charles Curtis set season highs with four assists and five points.
CC won 21 of 26 faceoffs and held a 38-9 advantage in ground balls.
The Tigers launched 45 shots, compared to just 22 for Hendrix.
Brendan Haas made five saves during the first half Colorado College and improved to 8-2 between the pipes. Max Pluss stopped five shots during the final 30 minutes. Keith Clemmons and Henry Waller each recorded 12 saves for the Warriors.
Kyle Bishop had nine ground balls to lead the CC defense, which held an opponent to five or fewer goals for the seventh time this season.
