SUWANEE, Ga. - The Eastern Division dominated the Western Division in the second weekend of cross division play. East teams went a combined 10-2 against the West highlighted by Birmingham-Southern, DePauw, Oglethorpe and Rhodes all sweeping home two game SCAC sets.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College split its two games over the weekend, falling 76-70 to Oglethorpe before rebounding with a decisive 82-48 win over Sewanee to improve to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Kola Alade had 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals in the loss to Oglethorpe while Scott Straley hit 4-of-8 from downtown to finish with a team best 20 points. Straley added six boards and four steals. Arron Mewbourn scored 10 points and handed out four assists in the game as the only other ‘Roo in double figures. The ‘Roos responded in a big way against Sewanee on Sunday with 13 different players getting into the scoring column in a balanced offensive attack. Spencer Burke, Kyle Lintelman and Josh Saunders all scored 11 points and Mewbourn added 10. The ‘Roos are back home this weekend when they host DePauw and Centre.

Birmingham-Southern went 2-0 this week, collecting wins 14 and 15 on the season against West Division opponents. On Friday against Hendrix, the Warriors jumped out early thanks to some cold shooting from the field by the Panthers. BSC trailed by as many as seven in the half before senior forward Roger Williams sparked the Panther offense en route to the halftime lead and eventual 75-68 win. Again on Sunday the Panther offense sputtered early, allowing Millsaps to take an early first half lead. This time freshman guard Hart Ahumada got the offense rolling, starting a 10-0 that put the Panthers up for good. The wins improve BSC to 15-2 on the season and 7-2 in conference play. They will return to the road this weekend to take on Trinity and Southwestern. Game times are 8:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday in Texas.

For the second straight weekend, Centre split a pair of SCAC games, defeating Trinity 57-50 Friday and then falling 70-69 to Southwestern Saturday. After shooting 57.7% (15-26) to jump out to an 18-point halftime lead against Trinity, the Colonels had to hold on in the second half for the seven-point victory. Centre made more field goals than Southwestern in Saturday's game, but the Pirates made four more three-pointers and one more free throw to escape with a one-point victory after leading by 10 at the half. Of the last two losses for the Colonels, both have come by only one point. Centre, now 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC will take to the road to play Colorado College and Austin College this week.

Colorado College missed out on a chance to temporarily re-claim sole possession of first place in the SCAC’s Western Division by dropping a 62-55 decision at Sewanee on Friday night. CC led 49-48 when Jeremiah Waters drained a three-pointer with 4:02 remaining in the game, but was outscored 14-6 the rest of the way. Nick Rose recorded his first double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Brady Ohlsen added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Waters scored 10. Colorado College made just 20 of 60 shots from the floor for a .333 field-goal percentage, its lowest in a conference game this season. Ohlsen scored 19 points in the loss at Oglethorpe. The Tigers play host to Centre and DePauw on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

DePauw improved to 14-4 overall, 7-2 in conference play and extended its win streak to six with wins over Southwestern (68-61) and Trinity (87-72). Against Southwestern, DePauw led by as many as 21 in the second half, but had to survive a late Pirates' rally. DePauw never trailed and built a 43-25 halftime advantage. The Pirates closed the gap to 61-57 with 3:56 left, but DePauw's Tony James responded with a three to push it back to seven. James led the Tigers with a career-high 17 points and three assists, while Sean Haseley followed with 13. In the win over Trinity, DePauw shot a season-high 61.7 percent from the field. DePauw briefly pushed the lead into double digits early in the second half, but Trinity pulled to within three at 62-59 with 7:12 left. DePauw's 11-2 run extended the lead to 82-63 and sealed the win.

Hendrix continued to roll downhill as the Warriors stretched their losing skid to eight games after a 75-68 loss to Birmingham-Southern on Friday and a 93-80 loss to Rhodes on Sunday. Hendrix is now 4-11 overall and 1-8 in SCAC play. The Warriors led for the majority of the first half until the Panthers grabbed the final lead change of the game with 4:11 left before the break. Birmingham-Southern took a 38-32 advantage into the locker room. A 14-4 run in Birmingham-Southern’s favor put them back up by 12, 61-49, with 7:01 left in regulation. Rhodes blazed the nets with 58.1 percent shooting behind a game-high 29 point performance from junior guard Nathan Ollie and 26 point outing from senior forward Reid Hamilton on Sunday afternoon. The first half of action remained close with nine lead changes and four ties. Rhodes eventually led by a game-high 15 points with 2:09 to go. The Lynx outscored the Warriors, 24-10, inside the paint in the second half.

Millsaps dropped a pair of conference games on the road to Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern over the weekend to fall to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the SCAC. For the second straight game, the Majors carried a lead late into the second half only to see it collapse as Rhodes rallied for the conference victory Friday, 58-53. The Lynx controlled play in the final six minutes of the game outscoring the Majors 12-5 to come away with the important win. Millsaps freshman Quinn Lemieux led all scorers with 13 points in the contest. Facing Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon, the Majors scored a season-low 41 points as the Panthers came away with their seventh victory in eight games to remain atop the SCAC East Division. Millsaps, now 1-7 on the road, shot just 7-for-35 (20 percent) from behind the arc in the two games. The Majors return home this weekend as Sewanee and Oglethorpe travel to Jackson for games Friday night at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., respectively.

Oglethorpe raised its conference record to 6-3 by securing weekend wins over Austin College (76-70) and Colorado College (76-62). Against Austin College four Petrels recorded double-figures on the night with Joe Kennedy leading the way with 15 points. Wade Weldon chipped in 14 points, Todd Ward posted 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win and Alex Richey recorded 13 points. Against CC, the Petrels closed the first half on a 26-7 run to turn a tie game into a 19 point halftime lead from which Oglethorpe would never look back. Fifteen different Petrels appeared in the contest with only one player, Wade Weldon, playing more than 30 minutes of clock time. Kennedy continued to heat up for the Petrels by scoring 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting. Oglethorpe is now 11-6 on the season and 6-3 in SCAC play, sitting in second place of the SCAC East standings. The Petrels hit the road again to face Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. Friday at 8 p.m.

Rhodes won both games this weekend. On Friday night, the Lynx defeated Millsaps in a defensive battle, 58-53. Rhodes placed three players in double digits. Seniors Larry Cunningham and Reid Hamilton, and junior Nathan Ollie all notched 12 points. Kory Kilpatrick grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Rhodes’ defense was staunch as they held Millsaps to just 39% shooting and forced 11 second half turnovers in allowing just 23 second half points. Sunday’s victory over Hendrix was an offensive matchup as the Lynx won 93-80. The 93 points were a season high for the Lynx, and the 49 second half tied their season high. The Lynx placed three players in double digits again with Ollie scoring a game high 29, Hamilton 26 and Andrew Galow 12.

Sewanee went 1-1 this weekend with a 62-55 win over Colorado College Friday before falling 82-48 to Austin College on Sunday. On Friday, Garrett Hollingsworth led the Tigers with a 14 point, 11 rebound double-double. He leads the Tigers this year with 9.7 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. On Sunday, Tent Williams led with 11 points, including a 3-6 effort from behind the three-point line. The Tigers are 4-13 (1-8 SCAC) and will play at Millsaps and Hendrix this weekend.

Southwestern went 1-1 against tough East SCAC opponents over the weekend to move to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference. After falling behind by 20+ points on Friday night SU rallied back but ran out of time at DePauw, losing 68-61. Saturday’s game was the exact opposite with Southwestern mounting a large lead at Centre but allowed the Colonels to rally back and take a brief lead. Senior A.C. Cox hit a three with 1:25 to play that proved to be the game winner as the Pirates left with the 70-69 victory. Southwestern begins a four game home stand this coming weekend beginning with Rhodes College on Friday night at 8 p.m. and continues with Birmingham-Southern on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Trinity lost a pair of road games to Centre and DePauw – two of the top teams in the SCAC East Division – over the weekend. Trinity made a second-half comeback against Centre on Friday, losing by just seven points in the end. On Saturday, the Tigers trailed by just three points late in the second half at DePauw, though the home team ended up winning by double digits. Luke Caldarera needs just 12 more rebounds to become the 12th player in Trinity history to record 500 career rebounds. He is also tied for 13th in career steals, needing 21 more to become the eighth Tiger player to reach 100 in a career. Trinity returns home this weekend, hosting Birmingham-Southern and Rhodes on Friday and Saturday nights. Last year against Birmingham-Southern, which is currently tied for the East Division lead at 7-2, the Tigers took a 65-56 road win. Rhodes, which is 3-6 in the East Division, lost an 83-77 game to Trinity last season.
