Southwestern Stuns Austin College; Advances to SCAC Women's Title Game

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In the wildest game of the tournament, Southwestern University scored the final seven points in regulation to force overtime and held on to defeat Austin College, 81-79, and advance to Sunday's championship game of the 2018 SCAC women's basketball game. Official Tournament Website

Cecily Woolfolk had a game-high 24 points and also puled down eight rebounds to lead the Pirates to their first title game appearance since 2015. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Austin College led by as many as 11 in the second quarter and settled for a 37-30 halftime lead after a three-pointer from Kacie West.
  • After shooting just 9-33 (27.3 percent), the Pirates came out smoking in the third quarter, shooting 76.9 percent (10-13) to tie the game at 52.
  • Trailing 71-64 with 2:56 remaining, Southwestern scored the final seven points of regulation to force overtime.
  • Both teams had mulitple chances with the game tied at 71 but could not convert.
  • Austin College assisted on 21 of its 33 made field goals; Southwestern assisted on 16 of its 28.

NOTABLES
  • Saturday's game was just the fifth overtime in SCAC women's tournament history and the first since 2015.
  • Southwestern advances to its third SCAC title game in program history and will play Trinity on Sunday for the championship just as it has done the previous two times. The Pirates are 1-1 in those games, including its only SCAC Tournament title in 2015.
  • Southwestern advancing to the title game as the three seed marks the third time in the last four years the third seed has made the title game. 
  • Austin College (20-6) will await word of possible NCAA at-large bid as the 'Roos are the seventh-ranked team in the latest NCAA South Region rankings.
UP NEXT
Southwestern (14-13) advances to take on Trinity University in the 2018 SCAC women's championship game Sunday at 2 p.m. MT or approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the men's title game. The winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
