Trinity Advances to Sixth Straight SCAC Women's Title Game

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After dominating most of the first half, Trinity University had to hold on against a scrappy Colorado College squad and squeaked out a 76-70 nail-biter in Saturday's first semifinal game of the 2018 SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament. Official Tournament Website

The top-seeded Tigers advance to play in their sixth consecutive SCAC title game and will play the winner of Austin College/Southwestern in Sunday's championship match. Tip-off will follow the men's title game and is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trinity led by as many as 16 and took a 37-24 lead into the halftime locker room, but CC shot 56.3 percent (9-16) in the third quarter and cut the lead to one at 44-43 on a layup by Payton Katich with 4:26 remaining in the period.
  • Trinity responded and closed out the quarter on a 9-3 run to take a 53-46 lead into the final period.
  • Colorado College had the lead down to one at the free throw line with a chance to tie but missed the back end of a two-shot situation to remain down 67-66 with 2:29 remaining.
  • The CC Tigers had another chance to tie the next trip down the floor but missed a three-pointer with 1:50 remaining.
  • Colorado College out-rebounded Trinity 43-27.
  • CC shot 47.4 percent from the game (27-57), including 18-of-31 (58.1 percent) in the second half. 
  • The teams combined to make 18 of 32 shots in the final quarter (56.3 percent).

  • Trinity advances to the championship game for the sixth straight year. The six straight tournament title game appearnances equals DePauw's six straight trips from 2003-2008. The Tigers are 3-2 in those five previous appearances - including a 78-67 victory over Texas Lutheran in last year's title game. 
  • Trinity will also try to equal DePauw's three straight SCAC tournament titles which the Indiana Tigers did in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
  • Trinity has six total SCAC women's basketball titles (1995, 2003, 2005, 2013, 2016 and 2017), which is the second-most by a program in SCAC history.
  • Colorado College ends its season with a 10-17 record - its most wins since the 2011-12 season.
