Trinity's 2003 National Title Run Selected Top SCAC Men's Soccer Moment

SUWANEE, Ga. - Trinity University completed a perfect season, using goals from midfielders Alex Woods and Josh Smith to defeat host Drew University, 2-1, and capture the 2003 NCAA Division III men's soccer championship on a cold and windy afternoon in Madison, N.J.

That national title moment is being recognized as the Top Moment in the history of SCAC men's soccer. Top 20 Moments homepage

Trinity (24-0), who became the first team from the state of Texas to win a national championship in any division, improved on its 2002 runnerup finish, taking the lead for good after 25 minutes when Woods headed home a right side cross from defender Rusty Harrington for a 1-0 lead. In the 50th minute, Smith converted a chip from striker Cullen Davies to make it 2-0.

Drew (20-2-3) narrowed its deficit to 2-1 in the 63rd minute when defender Michael Woessner blasted in a rebound of forward Derek Swanner's blocked shot.

The Rangers continued with momentum in their favor, outshooting Trinity 13-3 in the second half -- 18-10 for the game. Senior midfielder Jonathan Aliaga nearly tied the game with 13 minutes left when he hit the crossbar with a left-footed blast from 17 yards. Defender Michael Jacobson also narrowly missed by inches, curling a direct kick from outside the box over the net.

"Physically, we're drained," Trinity coach Paul McGinlay said after the match. "We weathered a hurricane in the second half."

As it had done all season, Trinity split time between two goalkeepers with Matthew Pepping making one save in the first half before giving way to senior Josh Rosenblum who made three stops.

Many players played the role of "hero" for the Tigers over the course of the tournament. Junior forward Chris Quinn had two goals in the national semifinal against Wisconsin-Oshkosh (his 24th and 25th of the season; tied for the second-most in a SCAC single-season), including the game-winner in the 108th minute to give Trinity a 3-2 double overtime victory.

Sophomore forward Cullen Davies set the NCAA record for points scored in the national tournament, totaling 18 points in five games.

Russell Kramer, the SCAC Director of Communications/New Media, had a chance to catch up with Trinity head coach Paul McGinlay as well as former Tiger All-American Josh Smith to reflect on the Tigers' magical 2003 season and the run to the national title.
