LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Brandon Douglas of Trinity University and Jamie Burns of Schreiner University have been selected as the SCAC Male and Female Character & Community Student-Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Sunday, September 29.
The SCAC Character & Community award was created in 2009 to
honor and recognize the efforts of the
extraordinary student-athletes of the conference who not
only excel athletically on the field, course, court, pool or
track, but also by serving their campus and community.

BRANDON DOUGLAS
OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior from
Plano, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community
Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending September 29,
2013.
Douglas is a three-year letterman and a team captain for the Tiger
cross country team and helped the squad to its first-ever SCAC
Championship in 2012. As a member of the track and field team this
past spring, he ran his personal best time in the 10,000 meter run
to aid the Tigers to the conference title in that sport.
Since coming to Trinity, Douglas has spent many hours as a tutor
and volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio,
assisting with their After-School Activities program. He has
also helped the Church Under the Bridge in San Antonio, serving
dinners and distributing clothing to homeless and needy
families.
Douglas has served as a Resident Mentor at Trinity for the past two
years, and has also participated in Trinity’s Leadership
Academy. Service to his community is a long-time commitment
by Douglas, who also logged over 200 hours as a volunteer at the
Medical Center of Plano while in high school, and was a member of
the Young Men’s Service League.
Douglas is majoring in Business & Economics, and will minor in
Human Communications. This past summer, he worked TIAA-Cref
as a Wealth Management Consulting Intern.
JAMIE BURNS OF SCHREINER
UNIVERSITY, a senior libero on
the women's volleyball team, has been selected the SCAC Character
& Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week
ending September 29, 2013.
Burns has been a key contributor to the team for her entire college
career. This fall, she again leads the team in digs and is one of
the captains for the Mountaineers.
Her contributions to the team, campus and community are
significant. The LaVernia, Texas native has accumulated 798 digs
during her first three years and is averaging 4.34 digs per set so
far this fall. She was named All-Conference (ASC) – Third
Team last fall.
She is a Biology major carrying a 3.87 GPA and earned academic
all-conference (ASC) in both years she was eligible. Burns has been
on the President’s List five of her six semesters at
Schreiner, and has served as the volleyball team’s
representative to the Student-Athlete Advisor Committee the past
three years.
In the community, Burns has been a consistent helper with the San
Antonio Area Food Bank, has participated in toy drives, has worked
with young girls from the YMCA, and (as a member of the Schreiner
SAAC) helped raise money for the YMCA Make A Change effort that
Schreiner has won for each of the past three years. She has also
mentored a young girl in the community of Kerrville. This past
summer, Burns gained experience volunteering at the Outpatient
Physical Therapy Department at the Guadalupe Regional Medical
Center in Seguin.
In her home community of LaVernia, Burns has served as a volunteer
coach for summer league volleyball, and has given lessons in both
volleyball and horseback riding.
Burns will graduate in May of 2014 and intends to go to physical
therapy school.
