Five SCAC Track Student-Athletes Selected to Compete at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -- Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference track & field student-athletes were selected as participants in the 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Texas Lutheran University will be sending one male and one female student-athlete to the event.

Sophomore Marquis Brown earned his second trip to the outdoor event, finishing with the seventh-best time in the 400-meter dash, 47.59 seconds. This would mark Brown’s second consecutive trip to the national championship event. In 2015, he finished sixth in his heat during prelim with a time of 49.13 seconds.

Fellow sophomore Akia Taplin earned her first trip to the event after posting a throw of 13.44-meters in the shot put at the Sam Houston State last-chance meet. This throw broke the Texas Lutheran record.

Trinity University will be represented by two males and one female.

Britney Sullivan will make her way to Iowa after recording a 11.78-meter mark in the triple jump. Sullivan, a sophomore for the Tigers, is competing at the national championship event for the second straight year. Last year, she finished in 19th place, posting a mark of 11.18 meters. Earlier this season, Sullivan became the first Trinity student-athlete to earn a bid to the indoor national championships since 2010.

Matt Love and Cody Hall will represent the men for TU at the national championship. Love posted a mark of 48.98 meters in the discus at a last-chance meet on Thursday to give him the nation’s 18th-best mark. Cody Hall improved his 110-meter hurdles time to 14.52 seconds, which is 14th in Division III.

For each men’s individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each women’s individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 16 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.

The championships will be held May 26-28 at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. The complete list of qualifiers is available on the following website: http://results.deltatiming.com/ncaa/tf/2016-ncaa-d3-outdoor-championships
