LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Eight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's cross country teams were off and running in 2019 season-opening meets this past week.
Only league newcomer St. Thomas was not in action after the Texas A&M Opener was cancelled on Friday due to weather in the area.
Southwestern was the first team out of the chute as the Pirates ran Friday morning at the Concordia (Texas) Tornado Watch Invitational. Although Southwestern did not have enough participants to score, freshman Emma Pertuit started her collegiate career on a positive foot, placing third in the 5k with a time of 21:25.
Later Friday evening, four more SCAC teams took to the course. Schreiner participated at the Hardin-Simmons Invitational where sophomore Sarah Endres finished the 4k event in 15th place among 26 runners with a time of 18:31.92. Johnson & Wales kicked off its 2019 season and junior Rachel Seligson paced the Wildcats to an eighth place finish at Friday's Terry Masterson Twilight Classic. She finished in 26th place with a 3-mile time of 21:59.0. At the University of the Incarnate Opener, Trinity finished fifth and Texas Lutheran placed seventh among eight teams. The best Tiger finish was by Brianna Ratliff, who placed sixth in the women's 4k race among a field of over 75 runners. The Trinity senior crossed the finish line in 15:34.1, just seven seconds behind the Incarnate Word competitor. TLU's senior Kylee Garcia led the Bulldogs with a 14th-place finish in a time of 15:52.2.
On Saturday, Austin College and Dallas competed against each other in the inaugural CROOSader dual meet. UD's Anna Wilgenbusch led the Crusaders with a first-place finish and a new school record in the 2-mile race with a 12:17.7 - shattering the previous program mark of 12:46 held by 2011 Hall of Fame Inductee Elena Yates. UD gathered four of the top five spots on the day. Leading the way for the Austin College women was Danielle Lozano, who finished third in the 2-mile race in a time of 14:06.4.
The Colorado College women also opened the 2019 season on Saturday, participating at the 10,000-foot Invite in Leadville, Colo., hosted by Colorado Mountain College. The Tigers were the only team other than CMC to compete at the meet, and 10 of the 11 female runners were from CC. Sophomore Lucy Wagner led the way in the 5K race, winning it handily with a time of 22:35.
