Trinity Women Win NCAA South/Southeast Cross Country Regional

Led by a 1-2 individual finish from seniors Maddie Murphy and Vanessa Moreno, Trinity University won the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country South/Southeast Regional at the Lee Hall Mansion course in Newport News, Va. this morning. Southwestern finished in 19th place and Colorado College was 12th at the West Regional.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Maddie Murphy, who won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, was one of seven Trinity runners who earned All-Regional honors as the Tigers cruised to a first-place finish at the South/Southeast Regional. Murphy earned medalist honors at the regional with a meet-best time of 21:33.29.

Joining Murphy on the All-Regional team were teammates Vanessa Moreno (second - 21:59.04), Rosemary Steup (fourth - 22:23.90), Michelle Oberndorf (14th - 23:01.87), Nicola Hill (15th - 23:05.32), Jackie Newell (17th - 23:05.73) and Autumn Kervella (32nd - 23:39.91). South/Southeast Regional Complete Results

With the regional team championship, the Tigers earned an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships in Hanover, Ind. next Saturday. Trinity easily outdistanced itself from runner up Emory by a score of 36 to 76.

It marks the fifth time in the last six years that an SCAC team has won the South/Southeast regional. It is also the Tigers' second consecutive regional championship and fourth overall (2004, 2008, 2012, 2013).

Southwestern University finished 19th with a team score of 482. The Pirates were led by All-Region performer Lilly Duarte, who will join the Trinity squad as an individual qualifier at the national meet. Duarte finished in ninth place with a time of 22:47.29.

Rounding out the Southwestern roster,  Kara Koinis finished in 69th place with a time of 24:36.36, Emily Ammon was 118th in a time of 25:53.35, Meg Greenfield was 149th in a time of 26:51.78, Valerie Vacek placed 159th in a time of 27:15.31, Brandi Martin was 176th in a time of 28:13.89 and Zainab Oketokoun was 187th with a time of 28:47.76.

Texas Lutheran University sent two runners to the championships. Melissa Longolia finished in a time of 24:06.18 (49th place) and Sarah Fritzsche came in with a time of 25:14.92 (92nd place).

Austin College, Centenary CollegeUniversity of Dallas and Schreiner University did not compete in the regional competition.

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Behind junior Rebecca Lavietes' 31st-place finish (23:20.50), Colorado College finished in 12th out of the 20 participating teams at the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country West Regional, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. West Regional Complete Results

Lavietes earned All-Regional status by finishing in the top 35 finishers.

Following Lavietes was senior Anne Taylor who placed 61st (24:06.66) and freshman Allison Crimmins who was 62nd (24:07.75). Junior Erin Morrow was 66th (24:16.92).

Rounding out the CC runners was sophomore Beryl Coulter (80th - 24:38.99), freshman Katie Sandfort (98th - 25:16.66) and freshman Leah Wessler (107th - 25:37.12). 

Colorado College was the only SCAC school that competed in the West Regional.
