Chelsey White, Hendrix College, Women's Basketball

CHELSEY WHITE OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a senior forward on the women's basketball team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending January 3, 2010.

White, who hails from Dardanelle, Ark., and is currently averaging 7.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Warriors, is constantly recognized by her professors and classmates as one of the top students and individuals within the Hendrix community. A Psychology major who has maintained a 3.5 GPA during her time at Hendrix, White has assisted several professors with numerous research projects within the psychology department and has presented some of her findings at the Arkansas Symposium for Psychology Students. She will be traveling to Dallas in April to further present her research at the Southwestern Psychological Association's annual convention.

However, it is White's creation of and involvement with the Odyssey funded project "Warrior S.T.A.R.S." that has garnered this nomination. The "Warrior S.T.A.R.S." program was developed by White as a community outreach program that is performed after school by the Hendrix College Women's Basketball Team. This program was put together under the direction of White, with the collaboration of the Hendrix Odyssey Department, as a way for Conway's youth to learn sportsmanship, teamwork, accomplishment, responsibility, and self-esteem; hence the STARS acronym.

Along with some of her teammates, White will have spent over 30 hours from September to December working with the third and fourth graders from the local Marguerite Vann Elementary School on a basketball ball-handling routine. The group showed their skills to the Conway and Hendrix communities during half-time of the Warrior men's basketball game against Millsaps College on Dec. 17th.
