HEATHER WALLS OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a junior from Loveland, Ohio, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending October 4, 2009.

Walls, a defender/midfielder on the Colonels' women's soccer team, spent last summer volunteering in rural Malawi, Africa. As a volunteer with World Camp for Kids, she helped educate children about HIV/AIDS, environmental degradation and gender equality/sexuality. Walls and her group spent three days per school in rural communities around Lilongwe working with children and helping them present to their communities the information they have learned about HIV and AIDS through skits and songs. Her group also planted trees with the classes and made and donated solar ovens and hand washing devices. The program lasted five week and before they left, they organized a program for orphans in Lilongwe.

On campus, Walls is involved in SMART peer education, plays the french horn in brass quintet and orchestra, is the PR director for Alpha Phi Omega (the service and leadership fraternity on campus), and is the Resident Assistant of one of the dorms, as well as serving as  a Lab assistant for Organic I lab.

Walls is also involved with her church in Cincinnati, Ohio and will be chaperoning a mission trip for them next summer as well as being involved with her ice hockey team in Northern Kentucky. In addition, she has also volunteered in transport at Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville.

"Heather is a very special player for us," Centre head women's soccer coach Jay Hoffman said.

"She upholds the highest standards both on and off the field. We are very lucky to have her here at Centre as she is such a wonderful student-athlete," Hoffman finished.
