CALLAGHAN
STARRETT OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a junior
defender on the Majors' soccer team, has been selected the SCAC
Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for
the week ending October 18, 2009.
As a freshman, Starrett participated in the week
long service camp - Challenge.
The spring semester of her sophomore year,
Starrett interned at Stewpot, a non-profit
children's organization in downtown Jackson. Stewpot is an
organization that provides a safe environment for children
after-school to play and receive homework help.
Starrett worked with second and third graders
and helped them with their homework.
The summer of 2009, she traveled to Manamani, South Africa and worked in the villages' preschool - teaching a class of fifty five and six year olds. Starrett spent a month living in a rural village with a host family and interacting with the community.
A two-time SCAC All-Academic selection, Starrett, who is from Madison, Miss., is continuing to work at Stewpot for a service learning project this semester.
