ANNIE
WIGGINTON OF CENTRE COLLEGE has been
selected the SCAC Character & Community Female
Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending March 28, 2010.
Wigginton, a first-year distance
runner from Bloomfield, Ky., is a member of the Colonels'
cross country and track and field teams and broke the school's
indoor record for the 1,000 meter run earlier this season.
Wigginton has hit the ground running her first
year in Danville, serving the local community in various ways. She
is currently a daily volunteer in the after school
program at Jennie Rogers Elementary School where she helps
students with homework and teaches instructional activities. She
also volunteers at the Charleston Health Care Center, which
includes program-related activities for the elderly.
She also tutored two latino students at Boyle County High School in
both English and Biology - helping both to improve their grades
significantly.
Back in her hometown of Bloomfield, Wigginton
helped to organize Picnic in the Park, an annual event for kids in
the community. She also was a volunteer with Bloomfield Community
of Tomorrow, which was her hometown's council that headed up
various community improvements. During her tenure with the group,
the council was awarded a grant that enabled the town to purchase
new sidewalks, benches and lights.
In high school, Wigginton started a school-wide
recycling program and was committee chair of the Key Club.
Her coach at Centre, Lisa Owens, had this to say about
Wigginton - "Annie is a fine student-athlete who
has participated in many service activities in the past and has
continued her service in the Danville community since she has been
on campus. Not only has she done so much in the way of
service for our community, but she also deserves this
honor because she is such a good-hearted person with very high
character."
