CYBIL COVIC OF
RHODES COLLEGE has been selected the SCAC Character
& Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week
ending March 14, 2010.
Covic, a senior from Cordova, Tenn., and a member
of the Lynx' women’s track and field team, is a Biology
major who bypassed a season of competition in the spring of 2009 to
study abroad in Kenya.
While abroad, Covic was able to volunteer within
some of the surrounding villages to help improve the life of those
living there. This included health check-ups for children,
distributing malaria medication and mosquito nets, and
administering eye exams. Covic's group also
improved the village's school by building new desks and chairs
along with a soccer field for the children's play time. The largest
project she worked on was a water catchment system for the village
to use.
Since her sophomore year at Rhodes, Covic has been
volunteering at the Memphis Zoo - working with reptiles and
amphibians in the zoo's herpetarium. She spends her time monitoring
animal diets and health, maintaining clean living environments for
zoo animals, disassembling and constructing animal displays for the
public, and educating the public on the animals within the
herpetarium.
