LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball wrapped up league play last week as Texas Lutheran clinched the top seed for the sixth consecutive season. The Bulldogs earned the No. 1 seed after winning the SCAC regular season championship for the fifth year in a row after posting a 21-1 mark against league opponents.
The 2019 SCAC Softball Tournament is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 26-28, at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana.
As the top seed, TLU (21-1) receives a bye into the winner's bracket semifinals and will face the winner of fourth-seeded Schreiner (12-12) and fifth-seeded Trinity (11-12) in the opening game of the double elimination tournament on Friday at 11 AM. The Mountaineers and Tigers just wrapped up a four-game series to close out the regular season last weekend with Trinity taking three of the four contests. The Bulldogs will take on the winner of game one in game three on Friday afternoon at 4:00 PM.
Second-seeded Southwestern (18-3) also received a bye into the winner's bracket semifinals as the Pirates will take on the winner of game two between third-seeded Centenary (12-10) and sixth-seeded Dallas (2-20) with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 PM. The Ladies swept the Crusaders in a four-game series when the two teams met earlier is the season back in March. The Pirates will take on the winner of game two in the final contest scheduled for Friday at 6:30 PM.
The double-elimination tournament continues Saturday with the winners of game three and four squaring off for a slot in the championship round at 3:00 PM. The losers of the four opening games on Friday, along with the winner's bracket championship loser (Game 7) will fight for the right to get back into the championship via several elimination games in a back draw. Sunday's championship round will be played at 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM (if necessary).
Since the inception of the SCAC Softball Tournament in the 1999 season, Trinity has claimed seven tournament titles (1999, 2000-02, 2005-07) to lead the league. Texas Lutheran is second with five tourney titles (2014-18), DePauw has won three (2008-09, '11) and Southwestern two (2010, '13). Millsaps (2003), Sewanee-Univ. of the South (2004) and Birmingham-Southern (2012) have one title apiece.
