Centenary Defeats Trinity to Survive and Advance in SCAC Softball Tourney

SHREVEPORT, La. – Host Centenary rallied from a four-run deficit aided by a six-run fifth inning to defeat Trinity, 6-4, to stave off elimination in a SCAC Softball Championship elimination game Saturday afternoon. Official Website l BracketPostgame Interview

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trinity jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Emily Reed smashed her fourth home run of the season.
  • The Tigers held a 4-0 lead after the third thanks to Brianna Pena notching her second and third RBI of the Tournament on a single to score Emily Vaclavik and Emily Barefield. Pena would come around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Gina Monaco.
  • Centenary got things going in the fifth, as Kaitlyn Price scored courtesy of a Tiger throwing error to get the Ladies on the board.
  • Wendy Gillet would cut the Trinity lead to two with an RBI single, her 29th of the season, scoring McKenzy LeJeune.
  • The rally continued behind a two RBI single from Sydney Hurley to bring her tournament total to four, bringing around Haley Campbell and Nichole Gauntt to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Centenary took the lead when Trinity committed its second error of the inning, throwing errant on a Hurely steal, allowing Gillet to score from third.
  • Erin Lewis scored the final run of the Centenary fifth, coming home courtesy of an RBI walk from LeJeune.

NOTABLES

  • This is the third-straight year Centenary and Trinity have met in the SCAC Tournament with the Ladies now holding a 2-1 advantage.
  • Hannah Scoggin improved to 9-5 on the year, coming on in relief to get the win. Scoggin went 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs with one walk. Scoggin, despite not starting any of the three Centenary contests has now be credited with the decision in all three games with a record of 2-1 in the tournament.
  • Centenary improves to 17-22 overall this season.

UP NEXT

The Ladies will move on to face Dallas later today at 5:30 p.m., in another elimination game. Meanwhile, the Tigers end their season with a record of 17-23.
