LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball season got underway last week with five teams in action, highlighted by Texas Lutheran and Southwestern posting perfect records to open February and the spring season.
Defending SCAC champion TLU (2-0, 0-0) earned a sweep of Huston-Tillotson to open the 2019 season. Offensively the Bulldogs stole 11 bases in the two games combined, including eight in the opening 8-2 victory. Sophomore Kelly Jurden led things at the plate for TLU posting a .571 batting average (4-for-7) with three runs scored, two RBI and a double in the two games combined.
Southwestern (2-0, 0-0) is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2016 season following a doubleheader sweep of Pacific Lutheran on Sunday. In game one, the Pirates won in walk-off fashion, 7-6, in eight innings and followed that performance with an 8-5 victory in game two. Junior Sydney Scott went 5-for-8 (.625 BA) at the plate with three runs score, two RBI and two doubles to lead the Pirates in the sweep.
Schreiner (2-2, 0-0) split four games to open the season that included the program's second 2-0 start in the last three years with wins over Hardin-Simmons, 11-1, and Millsaps, 9-1, last Friday. Freshman Kennedy Moody was impressive in her collegiate opening weekend debut, batting .625 (5-for-8) with four RBI, one run scored, one double and one triple and even earned a win in the circle pitching five innings in the win against Hardin-Simmons.
Austin College (0-4, 0-0) opened it 2019 campaign with a pair of losses to McMurry and a loss each to Millsaps and Hardin-Simmons, while Trinity (0-2, 0-0) got swept in a doubleheader by Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball continues this week as Centenary get its season underway with a road game against East Tex. Baptist on Monday and hosting a doubleheader against Millsaps on Sunday
