Softball Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The Trinity Tigers have won four of its last five games and are off to the programs best start through 14 games since 2002. Birmingham-Southern remained the lone undefeated team in conference now 6-0 on the year, it is the third time since Kimball Cassady took over the BSC softball program the Panthers have put together a win streak of six or more games.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College had a tough trip to Jackson last weekend, falling twice each to Millsaps College and Webster University to drop the team to 2-6 on the year. The ‘Roos fell 11-2 and 9-1 to Millsaps and Webster on Saturday before dropping a 5-2 decision against WU and falling 8-7 to the Majors on Sunday. Charlotte Trudell batted .400 with three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases to lead the ‘Roos and Jenny Dowsey hit .385 for the week. Suzanne Beltran hit .333 with a homer and four runs batted in. Sam Matulis went 0-2 in two appearances, surrendering 12 runs in 14.2 innings of work.  

Birmingham
Southern was able to pick up a shutout win 2-0 against Illinois College over the weekend after a pair of games against LaGrange had to be cancelled. The Panthers are now 6-0 on the season after Brittany Berkopec led BSC to the win accounting for both RBIs in the game. BSC will return to the diamond Friday on the road for a double-header with Covenant.

Centre dropped two more games this past week falling to 0-5 on the year, the first 0-5 start since 2009. In its first home games of the season, the Centre College softball team dropped a pair of games to Calvin College on Saturday, 11-7 in the first contest and 6-3 in the final match-up. Centre will next host Defiance College in a doubleheader Friday, March 9 at Milenium Park in Danville, Ky. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.  

Dallas
is now 4-10 on the season. Dallas traveled north this past weekend to participate in the 2012 St. Thomas Invite in Minnesota. The Crusaders opened up the weekend a strong note knocking off St. Catherine’s University 13-4. Dallas however would fall in its final five games of the weekend closing out the week 1-5. Dallas will return to the diamond Thursday against Sterling (Ky.).

Hendrix
opened the 2012 campaign by going 1-3 at the Warrior Softball Spring Fling Classic. On Saturday, Washington U. topped Hendrix 13-9, but the Warriors rebounded to shutdown Spalding 4-0. In the opener, junior first baseman Ashley Halbert and senior third baseman Brittiny Casteen each had two hits and two RBI. Junior center fielder Sydney Copeland hit a two-run homer as well. Halbert took the rubber against the Golden Eagles and tossed a five-hit shutout. Halbert also had a double and sophomore second baseman Catelyn Gibbs recorded three sacrifice bunts. Spalding defeated Hendrix 12-10 in eight innings to open play on Sunday. Casteen and sophomore Tiffany Hubbard had three hits each and Halbert and freshman Michaela Larabee both drove in three runs. Hendrix pounded out 17 hits against Washington U. in Sunday’s finale, but the Bears came out on top 15-6. Larbee went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and sophomore catcher DJ Sandidge was 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Hendrix will compete in the Rhodes College Softball Showcase of Hope this weekend.

Millsaps
welcomed in Webster University and Austin College for their home opener in a four game series. The Majors got things rolling on Saturday as they crushed both team in five innings. They returned Sunday where they dropped a game to Webster before coming back and defeating the ‘Roos. On the first day, Senior Allison Tarbox and junior Megan Yglesias led the way with incredible days, combining to go 6-for-8 with four home runs and 10 runs driven in. The Majors accomplished many interesting feats on Saturday including a triple play, back-to-back home runs, and a grand slam. On day two, The Majors started the afternoon off against Webster University as they fell 5-1 despite 10 hits, but bounced back in the second game of the day and defeated the Austin College 'Roos 8-7. In the win over AC, Tarbox led the way going 4-for-4 with four RBIs on the afternoon. She finished the weekend going 8-for-12 (.667) in four games including two home runs, two triples, a go-ahead double, and 10 RBIs. Yglesias was 2-for-4 for the day while McWilliams had two RBIs. Sophomore Laurel Jones earned the win as she improves to 3-2 on the year while Collins earned the save as she came in in the seventh as closed the book on the 'Roos. Millsaps is back in action on Wednesday as they welcome in Division II Christian Brothers University for a double header at the Millsaps Softball Complex. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Rhodes
went 2-2 this past weekend. The Lynx fell in two contests on Saturday 8-0 against Millikin and 9-4 against Fontbonne. Rhodes bounced back strong on Sunday picking up two wins over both teams the dropped games against on Saturday. The Lynx knocked off Fontbonne 10-3 before defeating Millikin 3-1 in seven innings. Rhodes returns to action Saturday against old SCAC rival DePauw. 

Sewanee
opened the season with a split in the Agnes Scott Softball Invitational in Decatur, Georgia.  The Tigers pounded Wesleyan College by a score of 15-1 and were edged out by host Agnes Scott College 6-5 in their second game of the day. In their first game of the day, the Tigers pounded out 12 hits en route to the 15-1 victory over Wesleyan.  Grace Cobbs was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game with a double and two RBI.  Erin Polena, Kayla Sewell, Codi Ellis and Claire Knepshield each contributed two hits.  Polena, Ellis and Kali Ousley drove in two runs each. Freshman pitcher Sarah Hamilton picked up her first career win in the game. Freshman Kayla Sewell ripped a pair of solo homeruns in the second game of the day against Agnes Scott to account for Sewanee's first two runs of the game, but the Tigers found themselves trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning.  With two outs in the inning Polena singled, Cobbs coaxed a walk and Michelle Thibodeaux followed with a single loading the bases.  Sewell drew a walk chasing home Polena from third to make the score 6-3.  TheTigers drew within two runs of the Scotties when Hamilton drew a base on balls.  A passed ball brought the Tigers within a run at 6-5.  Senior Carly Warfield then ripped a line drive to right field, but a diving catch by the Agnes Scott outfielder ended the Tiger rally and the game. Sewell led the seven-hit Sewanee attack with the first two homeruns of her career.  Polena, Thibodeaux, Hamilton, Knepshield and Ousley each had one hit.

Southwestern spent the weekend in Farmer's Branch as the only school invited to compete in the ASC Crossover. SU represented the SCAC well, splitting games over the weekend against some of the top teams in the nation. The Pirates opened the weekend against the University of Ozarks on Friday at noon. Southwestern opened with two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as they defeated UO 3-1. Game two was a rematch of last week's double-header as SU sought revenge on UT Tyler. After six scoreless innings the Patriots posted three runs in the top of the seventh and Southwestern wasn't able to respond as they fell 3-0. Day two pitted the Pirates against #2 nationally-ranked Louisiana College. LC's pitching kept SU's bats quiet as they recorded just one hit in the game, falling 5-0. Southwestern closed out the event with a huge win over Centenary College. The Pirates posted four runs in the first inning and five in the second en route to an 11-3 run-rule victory. With the split SU sits at 6-7 on the season. They have a double-header at Texas Lutheran on Tuesday before heading to Florida to compete in the Rebel Games.

Trinity
went 3-1 over the past week of action, splitting with Division II Incarnate Word, and sweeping a doubleheader against NAIA school Our Lady of the Lake.  The Tigers have improved to 9-5 overall this season, and have won four of their past five games. Following a narrow 4-2 loss to Incarnate Word, Trinity picked up a 7-6 win to split the doubleheader, then came back the next night to beat OLLU 6-3 and 5-0 for the team’s second doubleheader sweep of the season. Trinity will not play this week, but will make up for it the following week with a total of eight games overall –  only two of which will be at home.  The Tigers face UT-Tyler on Tuesday, March 13, then take on Concordia (TX) for the second time this season.  Trinity will then face four different teams at the Tucson Invitational on March 16-17.
