SUWANEE, Ga. - Weather was a factor over the weekend with a number of SCAC tilts postponed or canceled. Birmingham-Southern remained perfect on the season after defeating Huntingdon twice over the weekend and Berry once. The Panthers will open up conference play this weekend against Sewanee.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College went
1-3 on the week to bring their record this season to 5-5 overall,
splitting a doubleheader with UT-Dallas before dropping a pair of
games to Hardin-Simmons and Central College over the weekend.
Against UTD in game one, the ‘Roos got two hits from Suzanne
Beltran, Sam Smith and Charlotte Trudell, with Trudell knocking in
a pair of runs in the victory while Ashley Johnson tossed a
complete game to earn the win in a 5-3 victory. In game two, the
‘Roos rallied from three runs down in the fourth to tie
things at 5, but UTD plated three runs in the top of the seventh to
hand AC an 8-5 loss. Heather Farquhar went 2-for-4 with three RBI
in the loss. The ‘Roos finished up the weekend by dropping an
8-0 game to Hardin-Simmons and a 4-0 game to Central.
Birmingham Southern moved to 6-0 on the season
this past weekend with three wins in the Panther Classic, hosted by
BSC. On Saturday, the team defeated Berry College, 15-0 in five
innings, and Huntingdon College, 7-6. Against Huntingdon, senior
Jena Franks hit the game-winning triple in the top of the seventh
(BSC was playing as the visiting team). Then on Sunday BSC beat
Huntingdon again, this time 2-1 in nine innings, with the
game-winning RBI coming from junior Melissa Revis in the bottom of
the ninth. The Panthers are on the road for the next month,
beginning with a trip to Sewanee this weekend to open SCAC play,
Saturday and Sunday.
Centre is scheduled to open its season Monday,
March 2 with a doubleheader against St. Catharine College at
Millenium Park in Danville, Ky.
#14 DePauw didn't play last week. The Tigers will
open its season on the road at the Maryville College Invitational
Saturday March 5th.
Hendrix stumbled with four losses in its season
opening appearance at the 2010 Chick-Fil-A Classic on Saturday and
Sunday. The Warriors faced No. 7 Washington University in the
opener and then Emory University in the night cap on Saturday.
Hendrix then took on Emory again in Sunday’s first game
before falling to host Rhodes College to finish the tournament. The
Warriors fall to 0-4 for the first time since the 2004 stretch when
Hendrix started the season with double header losses University of
Arkansas-Pine Bluff and University of the Ozarks. Hendrix tallied
eight hits and four free passes in its 8-4 loss to Washington. The
Warriors fell behind 5-0 after 3 1/2 innings until the bottom half
of the fourth when first year 3B Ashley Halbert recorded an RBI
single and junior RF Frances Goodrich tagged a two-run base knock.
Washington scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and Hendrix
scored its final run in the sixth on Halbert’s second RBI
single. The Warriors suffered a 14-4 mercy rule loss to Emory in
the two teams first meeting. Emory exploded for nine runs in the
first two innings and Hendrix put one run across in the first and
second. Emory padded its lead with one run in the third and then
scored four runs on six hits in the fourth, while Hendrix scored
its last two runs in the fourth to reach the final mark. Hendrix
was held hitless and Emory was held scoreless in the first three
innings of the their second meeting. The Warriors grabbed its first
lead of the season with two runs in the fourth, while Emory made it
a one run game in the bottom half. Sophomore LF Trace Grinnell
hammered a solo home run in the fifth. Emory rallied for three runs
on three hits and two errors in the seventh for the come back
victory. The Warriors finished the tournament with two hit 8-0
mercy rule loss to SCAC foe Rhodes on Sunday. The Lynx jumped out
to a 5-0 run in the first inning, added two in the fourth and then
scored the eighth run in the sixth.
Millsaps hit the road
for the LeTourneau Spring Classic but ended playing a doubleheader
against East Texas Baptist University on Saturday after inclement
weather and poor field conditions forced the cancellation of games
on Friday. The Majors struggled to bring home runners in the two
games scoring just two runs while stranding 18 on the base paths.
Both runs scored came on solo home runs by Megan Yglesias and
Jennifer McKinley, who combined for six of the 11 Millsaps hits. In
game one, the Majors fell behind early allowing three runs in the
first inning as the Tigers took advantage of a Millsaps error to
take the 3-0 lead. ETBU closed out the first game 4-1 as Millsaps
stranded 10 base-runners in the game. Game two began with the
Tigers again taking an early lead as they scored a run in the
bottom of the third inning for a 1-0 lead. After adding another run
in the fourth for a 2-0 lead, the Majors cut the deficit in half
when McKinley hit her first home run of the season. ETBU shut down
Millsaps the rest of the way and scored an insurance run in the
sixth to sweep the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory in game two.
Kasey Thibodeaux took the loss in both games allowing five earned
runs on nine hits while pitching two complete games for the Majors.
Millsaps (1-5) will be back in action Tuesday when it travels to
the University of West Alabama for a doubleheader beginning at 3
p.m.
Rhodes posted a 2-2 record at this weekend’s
Chick-Fil-A Classic. Rhodes opened the Classic with a 2-0 win over
Emory University, paced by a 4-hit shutout from sophomore Chelsea
Peters. Sophomore Elise Suna’s 2-run double in the 4th
provided all of the offense the Lynx would need to secure the win.
In the second game, Rhodes battled #7 Washington University, with
the Bears needing extra innings to defeat the Lynx. Trailing 7-2 in
the bottom of the 7th, Rhodes mounted a 2-out rally, scoring 5 runs
on consecutive hits from Elise Suna, Armanda Venzia, and Katie
Stich, followed by a walk by Jennifer Whatley and a 3-run double by
Kelli Zomer to tie the game at 7 and force an extra frame. The
Bears answered with 5 runs in the 8th to take a 12-7 lead, and
Rhodes saw their final rally fall short, as they could only pick up
2 runs in the 8th and fell to the Bears 12-9. After dropping
Sunday’s first game to Emory 7-1, the Lynx rallied to defeat
Hendrix in a non-conference game 8-0 in 6 innings. Rhodes sent 9
batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 5 runs
highlighted by a lead off home run from Kelli Zomer and a grand
slam from Sara Bowen. Peters pitched her second shutout of the
weekend, allowing just 2 Warrior hits and striking out 4. Rhodes is
now 4-4 and will host Millikin, Lagrange, and Berry this weekend in
the Rhodes College Spring Classic.
Sewanee did not play and will open up the season
against Birmingham-Southern this weekend.
Southwestern had just one game this week thanks to
the erratic weather conditions in Central Texas. Their one game was
a big one, however, as Southwestern defeated nationally ranked
Central College at the LeTourneau Classic 4-3. Sophomore Taylor
Turpin drove in the game winning run in the ninth inning to push SU
over the top. Southwestern is now 5-4 on the season. They next play
host to Texas Lutheran University for a double header on March
9th.
Trinity went 0-2 at the LeTourneau Tournament this
past weekend, losing a 7-0 game against hosting LeTourneau, and
taking a 6-2 loss against Hardin-Simmons. Originally scheduled as a
two-day event that gave Trinity a chance for four games over the
weekend, the LeTourneau Tournament was postponed and rescheduled a
number of times, leaving the Tigers with a two-game weekend.
Trinity returns home for four games this week, opening up with a
Tuesday afternoon doubleheader against Texas Lutheran. The Tigers
will host Evangel University in a doubleheader this weekend, then
head back on the road for two games next week.
