Trinity Women Advance to 12th Consecutive SCAC Final After 64-54 Semifinal Win over Schreiner

Schreiner jumped out to a 12-8 lead late in the first quarter before the Mountaineers held a 21-13 lead at the end of the first period. Nariyah Buggs 3-pointer early in the second quarter pushed the Scheriner lead to 24-13. Schreiner's lead was as much as 13 before Trinity began cutting into the lead around the midpoint of the second quarter. A Maggie Robbins layup just before halftime cut Schreiner's lead to just 32-28 at the intermission. 

Trinity responsed by taking command of the game in the third. The Tigers outscored the Mountaineers by an 18-7 margin and then repeled any comeback attempt from Schreiner.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams shot the ball equally well as Trinity held a slim shooting edge while connecting at a 32.8 percent clip compared to Schreiner's 32.3 percent clip.
  • Schreiner opened the game shooting 50.0 percent (8-of-16) from the floor in the first quarter. 
  • Trinity clamped down defensively in the third as the Tigers limited the Mountaineer to just 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from the field in the third period. 
  • Schreiner held a slim 47-45 rebounding edge. 
  • The Mountaineers did receive considerable help from their bench as they outscored the Tiger bench by a 20-12 margin.
  • The game featured three ties and four lead changes.

  • Tianna Murray: 12 points, 4-of-8 FG (3-of-6 3FG), three rebounds

NOTABLES

  • Trinity will be making its 12th straight and 17th overall appearance in the SCAC title game. Both of those marks are program records for the SCAC tournament modern era. Trinity is 9-7 all-time in SCAC champinship games.
  • Saturday's semifinal matchup between Trinity and Schreiner was the third SCAC tournament matchup between the two. Trinity now holds a 3-0 edge in the three all-time meetings, including today's win. 
  • Trinity and Schreiner last met in the 2017 SCAC semfinals when the Tigers earned a 75-59 victory.
  • The Tigers improved to 36-12 all-time in the SCAC tournament while Schreiner moved to 7-11 in SCAC postseason play.
  • Schreiner ends its season with a 10-17 record.
