Buzzer Beater Tip-In Sends Schreiner to SCAC Semifinals

SHERMAN, Texas - Trailing by one point with 1.7 seconds remaining, Schreiner University's Jalen Ned tipped in his own miss as the buzzer sounded and the third-seeded Mountaineers pulled out a 51-50 quarterfinal nail-biter over sixth-seeded Southwestern University Friday afternoon at the 2022 SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament. Official Tournament Website | Photo Gallery | Postgame Interview

A lay-up by Kyle Poerschke gave Southwestern the 50-49 lead with 1:30 remaining, a lead the Pirates held through a couple of exchanges of posession. Schriener found itself with the ball and the shot clock off to set up a win or lose final possession. After calling a timeout with 10 seconds remaining, Schreiner's Alex Dehoyos missed three-pointer was rebounded by teammate Bronson Evans and the Mountaineers called a timeout to set up the final sequence of events.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southwestern turned 11 Schreiner first-half turnovers into 14 points and took a 32-25 halftime lead over the Mountaineers.
  • Schreiner fought back in the second half, taking its first lead since the 12:06 mark of the first half, with a free throw by Dehoyos to go up 35-34 with 12:54 remaining in the game.
  • From that moment, the lead exchanged hands 11 times, with no team taking more than a four-point lead, which culminated with the aforementioned late game theatrics at the 1:30 mark.
  • After shooting 40.0 percent (12-30) in the opening half, Southwestern struggled and hit just 4 of 28 shots in the second half (14.3 percent) to finish the game at 27.6 percent. The Pirates were 1-for-12 from distance in the second half. Schreiner finished the contest at 35.1 percent, but also struggled from beyond the arc, hitting on just 1 of 18 shots from distance (5.6 percent) for the game.
  • Schreiner outscored Southwestern 36-18 in the paint and outrebounded the Pirates, 48-38.

NOTABLES
  • Ross' 18 rebounds are just two shy of the SCAC tournament single-game record of 20, set by Centenary's James Sapp in a 2014 game against Trinity.
  • The game was just the second tournament matchup between the two schools. Schreiner defeated Southwestern, 82-76, in the 2017 semifinals.
  • Schreiner's victory over Southwestern was its third of the season as the Mountaineers swept the Pirates during the regular season. The two played on back-to-back nights in January with Schreiner earning the 73-59 win on 1/7 at Southwestern and the 77-70 victory a night later at Schreiner.
  • Southwestern ends its season with a 9-17 record.
