Trinity Runs Away with 2014 SCAC Men's Track & Field Title

The TU Tigers rolled up 289 points and earned a decisive 133 point victory over second-place Southwestern University (156 points) to earn the program's second-consecutive title and ninth all-time.

Trinity's Stephen Mason and Southwestern's Joseph Quintero both scored 28 points to share SCAC Male Athelte-of-the-Meet honors.





George Warren got the Texas Tigers off to a good start Saturday morning with his win in the long jump, leaping 21 feet, 8 1/4 inches. Colorado College's William Harlow was second (19 feet, 11 inches) and Trinity's David Stroud was third (19 feet, 11 inches).

Southwestern posted a 1-2-3 finish on the awards podium in the javelin, including the Pirates' Daniel Poole who defended his 2013 title with a toss of 162 feet, 1 inch. Teammates Rance Thorne (152 feet, 5 inches) and Quintero (125 feet) finished second and third respectively.

Mason gave Trinity its second field event win of the morning, taking first place in the discuss throw. The freshman tossed the apparatus 117 feet, 8 inches. Southwestern's Thorne was second (111 feet, 3 inches) and Quintero was third (107 feet, 5 inches).

Warren defended his high jump title from a year ago, clearing 5 feet, 11 1/2 inches at this year's event. His teammate, David Stroud, was second with a jump of 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches.

Trinity's Chris Soto led the pack in the 1,500 meter run, crossing the line in the winning timeof 4:10.12. Dallas' Ryan McAnany was second in a time of 4:12.80 and Colorado College's Graham Frank placed third in a time of 4:13.30.

William Harlow of Colorado College earned top honors in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 17.59. Vincent Omegba of Trinity was second in a time of 17.73 and Southwestern's Joe Sponsel finished third with a time of 19.93.

Will Paulus of Trinity finished in first place in the 400 meter dash with a finishing time of 49.08. Teammate Mike McIntosh was second in a time of 49.87 and Southwestern's Lando Duarte finished in third place with a time of 50.21.

Trinity went 1-2-3 in the 100 meter dash with Cody Wolfe leading the pack and earning the unofficial "Fastast Man in the SCAC" designation with a 11.03 finish. Adam Saunders was second in a time of 11.05 and Darian Sommers was third in 11.14.

Ian Plantz earned Trinity another individual title with a first-place finish in the 800 meters (1:58.19). Teammate Kirk Gulliver was second (1:59.12) and Dallas' Barton Holdridge finished third (1:59.31).

Southwetern's Duarte took first-place honors in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.34. Trinity's Omegba was second in 1:00.90 and Southwestern's Sponsel placed third in a time of 1:03.83.

Trinity earned another medal stand sweep in the 200 meter dash with Paulus earning top honors with this winning time finish of 22.06. Wolfe had to seettle for second with a time of 22.47 and McIntosh was third in a time of 22.50.

Taylor Piske gave Trinity its 11th and final individual victory with his first-place performance in the 5,000 meters (15:50.08). Colorado College's Richmond was second (15:55.47) and Trinity's Gerardo Hernandez placed third (16:00.09).

In the final event of the meet, Trinity put the icing on its championship performance with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of Paulus, McIntosh, Plantz and Warren finished the event with a timeof 3:26.80. With a late kick, Southwestern finished second (3:27.79) and Dallas, who led for the first two laps, finished third (3:30.45).
